Tranny Problem...

Recently my tranny has been slipping bad when it shift from 1st to 2nd but the other shift are very smooth but its bothering the hell outta me with 1st to 2nd, So I just walked in the door from changing my tranny fluid, I drained it out the pan and put 4 quarts back in there hopped in it and it was basically feeling the same way. Any suggestions on what it could be, i hope its not my tranny need rebuilding or anything. Advice welcome.

Pl. provide the following

1) Maintainence history
2) Num of miles before changing fluid
3) Kind of abuse/pampering it has recieved over the years (if you are the only owner/driver).

you shuld put lucas trasmission additive i got this from their website.

Lucas Transmission Fix

Lucas Transmission Fix is a non-solvent formulas that stops slip, hesitation and rough shifting in worn transmissions and completely eliminates most seal leaks. Use in any transmission for preventative maintenance.Use also in light duty manual transmissions to increase shifting ease and transmission life.
Key Benefits
  • Contains no solvents
  • Lowers operating temperatures and stops foaming
  • Can be added to existing fluid without draining any out
  • Effective in an extremely high percentage of cases

First off you dont put any damnnn additives into the tranny. Take time to understand the problem vs putting some OTC additives......

Looks like it needs a drain/fill to begin with. Castrol MV import ATF is good ATF for a bargain price... I will do quick drain/fills to be sure the old ATF is out.

Why would he do that when all he needs is the updated TCM?

This isnt a new problem for A33 auto trannies. Thats why there's been a TSB on this exact problem for quite some time now.

By the symptoms you're describing, yes.

However, the updated TCM isnt cheap IIRC. Will run you around $350-400 through DaveB.

Ask for Dave Burnette and tell him you're a member of Maxima.org, he will work with you on a fair price.

Tee00Max, honestly u are getting BS advice for folks talking about filters/TCM etc.

There is no filter in our trannies, it is a screen. If you know by now there is a bolt on the screen, it is almost impossible to get to, so quit thinking on those terms.

TCM has been a issue on 00-01 trannies only if you abuse it. U won't find a whole lot of hits on this forum/google on JATCO trannies. So stop chasing a ghost.

Do drains/fills and keep the tranny happy.

This is bs.

You admit the TCM has been an issue for A33 auto's (00-01's), but you automatically chalk it up to "only if you abuse it"?

Then why is there a TSB for TCM's in 00-01's?

How could you possibly know that all problems with the TCM occur as a direct result of abuse, even though there was a TSB for it?

You couldnt.

Anyways, I'll dig them up when I have more time, but there are several threads and posts that directly point to the 1-2 slips as a result of a TCM, not to mention TSB's.

Original TSB, describing the exact symptons TeeMax is describing....

If its not the TCM, then shift solenoids or valve body would be your next step.

My take on this is do drains/fills and see if that changes the behavior. All the parts documented for folks here are not cheap, they can easily take the bill to $1000 even if you replaced it yourself (add another $500 if you are going to give it to the stealership not knowing if they replaced the part of not, they may just wipe the mapping and put in factory fix to make it look like it is all BRAND new).

It isn't worth it when the car is 9 yrs old and could be worth less than $5000.!!

IMO pushing out the inevitable by doing drains/fills is a better option than putting in so much money into it. If the car ran for 125K on a faulty VB, solenoids, TCM or whatever, the probability of extending its life futher is shortsighted.

BTW, I have 3 friends (4 of us together graduated with MSEE) and bought maximas. We kind of all liked and fell in love with our maximas. All my friends traded in their maximas before 125K miles and moved on and they all complained about the trannies, P1320 etc., they would occasionaly abuse the tranny. They never changed the tranny fluid, I kept doing drains/fills and flushes and I have racked up 168K miles on my tranny. JATCO trannies are know to be of solid engg and they may not be perfect but then what is perfect in this world. My 2006 highlander tranny shifts like POS, my wife is scared out of her mind with the hesitation, go look up on google u will see 1000000s of posts on this specific AW tranny but on the same note you will not see failures. How am I going to get the best out of it, drain and fill every year?

So start with drains/fills and see how that goes before dumping a lot on money on it.

yeah that bolt that love_00_max is talking about is a pain in the *** to take off you need a impac gun to take it of ok or a drill gun, make sure to clean you oil pan to. you could buy a transmission oil filter in any auto parts.

I heard my name Let me know if I can be of any assistance. I do have a TCM for sale purchased from Dave B. It did not solve my problems because my car isn't flaring. My vin# also falls outside of that TSB period.

For a 2000 Max with Auto tranny, how many quarts are drained? Thanks.
