You've put up with me for a whole year.

Well, today is exactly one year since I joined this forum. I have a total of around 230 posts in that year. Some will say that's not very impressive. But I say that's exactly what it should be. After all, being a post ***** is like being a porno star, i.e., not something you brag about to your children. How did I do it? By following a few basic precepts:

>I don't post bragging about a title promotion. Who really cares?
>I don't congratulate such posts. There's no such word as "congrats" anyway.
>I don't post just smiles. It's inane and a complete waste of bandwidth.
>I avoid one word posts. I save it up for an intelligent sentence. Threads like this is what I mean:
Cool
Wow!
Huh?
What?
Lol
Hmmm
Right

>I don't start a two-way conversation in a thread that's discussing something completely different.
>I don't post inside jokes. There are probably 150 people logged in who won't get it.
>I don't ask questions that the search feature has answered a hundred times.
>I don't make fun of people's spelling or grammar unless they're so illiterate that you just have to. And I've had to more than once.
>I preview my post before submitting it. If it doesn't sound informative, intelligent or funny, then I forget it.

Next year I'm shooting to go below 200!

I don’t consider abbreviations as words, they are just shortened forms of words. Besides, I did look it up and in my copy of Webster’s New Word Dictionary, congrats is not there.

The real issue is my dislike for lazy internet shorthand. Sentences like “n e 1 c tht moo v?” demonstrates that the author has no respect for written english nor literacy in general. Perhaps he only wants to appear “cool.” I outgrew that nonsense many years ago.

Wait, I didn't post that. You replied to the wrong post, or did you? I, actually, agree 100% with you and your dislike for "lazy internet shorthand." I adjusted the *quote* calls to reflect the correct attribution. I hate to be targeted for butchering the English language. My mother is a writer and I think I may have learned a lesson or two through high-school and college.

I think that some people use shorthand to keep the message brief, especially if they are in a hurry. I for one use it occasionaly but I don't make it a habit. I really wouldn't go as far as saying that the author has no "repect" for written english and I wouldn't say that they do it to be "cool". Maybe they don't want to type a lot. Are you some kind of english major or something? Seems like it bothers you.

[/B][/QUOTE]Crying out loud, man this isnt a english class... its a FORUM. you discuss maxima related things, and who cares how the person types? Is this going to be graded? By they way, we dont have many of those people who type like the way you just explained... rather rare on this forum. I have pointed out your mistakes before and I say it doesnt matter.

I don’t really want to get into lengthy responses to the last two posts; it’s really an off topic discussion for another time. But I will say that although I was not an english major, proper english has always been a must, through graduate school and certainly in my profession. And I wonder if the deterioration of pubic education since I went to school has led to your current attitude. If so, it does bother me.

Americans have always attempted to imitate their heroes. Whether it was wearing a 6-shooter to imitate The Duke, slicking your hair back to imitate Travolta, or wearing the white sports jacket to imitate Don Johnson and be Miami Vice, we have always imitated our heroes and those people who we thought were the definition of "cool." Today's "heroes" and superstars set a standard to abuse the English language and today's children and teenagers imitate that abuse. Whether or not you believe that these emblems of our great society are good role models or not, do not blame the public school system...no teacher has ever been able to convince an 11-year old child that his or her hero could ever do anything wrong. Today, it just seems to take longer for children to outgrow hero worship.
