Emissions Testing in North Carolina...Headlight issues

I just moved to NC from CT. Before I register the Maxima here, I was told I need to go through a safety/OBD inspection. So what exactly does this inspection entail? Do they simply check for CEL codes, or is it more in-depth?

I'm worried that the current headlight issue I'm having is going to make result in a failed emissions. As of now, I have the ebay halos installed after my OEM got a crack in it. (yes, I know they are horrible quality but I was tight on cash and got a good deal) Anyways, I made some bonehead mistakes wiring and ended up with one non-functioning high beam.

I've attempted to fix the problem, but the wiring is a total mess. So, if the safety/ODB inspection is going to check for high beams, I need to know so that I can start looking for some replacement headlamps.

On a sidenote, if I do decide to replace the headlights, I'm going with OEM 2k2 lights...but I can't find the wiring writeup for installing them on a 2k1. (The one linked in the How-To section directs me to a page for 2K2 Alarm Fix instead.)

I'm not familiar with the wiring on how to install the headlights, but I can tell you this...Even though it's a different state, New York State inspection requires all lighting to be fully operative as designed. That means that the high beams MUST work to pass a SAFETY inspection. Headlights are not part of the emissions inspection here, but are checked during inspection (since any vehicle more than 2 model years old is safety/emissions inspected). I'd really look into some wiring diagrams and get those lights fixed (or replaced if you have to). Also, check whether or not those eBay lights are DOT approved. If the inspector's feeling grumpy that day or happens to check the lenses and they're not approved it'll result in a failure. (Keep in mind I'm going by NYS inspection regulations, I'd assume it was similar for safety components.) I hope that helps somewhat, sorry I couldn't provide more on swapping the lights!

Drive to BFE and get it inspected haha.

I get my inspected back home (rural MO) at firestone. He checks the lights (don't remember doing high beams) and that's it. But in the city (St. Louis) they put the car on a lift and inspect every damn little thing. Simply absurd. If you have some ghetto shops I'd take it to them. You've got to have friends/family that know "the place" to take it to.

yes the safety inspection is basically nothing at all they just check little things like your turn signals and all that but they will check your high beams, I have low beam only HIDS and when its time for inspection i change em out, depending on where you take it some people dont even care! So ask around first for a cool shop nearby.

What part of NC did you move to?

It usually simple stuff if u throw a CEL u wont pass basically, The Dealer can pass u baised on what code u are throwing ie knock sensor u will still pass even if u are throwing this code.

If ur in the RDU area let me know, some places are alittle **** about inspections, jiffy lubes are actually notoriously strict

In GA, emission testing is a breeze...plug in, check if the CAT is present and they hand you the certificate...so far so good.

Im also wondering what they check on the north carolina inspection or could i just take it to firestone and get an inspection and have them fill out the paper work. Only thing i have is the high mileage 260K, air bag light blinking which im going to see if i can remember how to fix it, and one of my front pre-cat is gutted. And crack in windshield

Only certain counties seem to require an OBD II emissions test, where they plug in a scanner and check for failed readiness monitors (I believe the EPA allows for one failed monitor, at least here in the NE). The safety inspection looks to be basic:

Brakes, including the parking brake
All lights (headlights, tail, brake, plate lights, and turn signals)
All lights must be mounted properly and have no cracks in the lenses.
Headlights must be properly aimed
The horn must work and be firmly mounted with no frayed wires
All springs and steering mechanisms must work
Windshield wipers must function, and blades must be in good condition
Aftermarket window tints must have light transmittance of 32% or greater
All rear-view mirrors must be mounted properly and adjustable
All tires must be in good condition, with at least 2/32 inch tread depth
