5.5 Gen Bi-Xenon HID Projector Retrofit

Has anyone tried or looked into a Bi-Xenon HID Projector Retrofit for their 2002 or 2003 Maxima? I'm sick of the crappy standard HID's Nissan shipped with the car.

I wonder if it's possible to buy the not very well thought of 5th gen ebay projectors and replace the crappy included projector with a quality projector from The Retrofit Source.

So u dont like the oem headlight look or is it just the color of the hid bulbs? If its the color just get different bulbs. I got those ebay headlight no retrofitting or hid and I hate them.

Yea, I think you can swap the ebay projector to the TSX or FX45 projectors. I have a FX45 projectors laying around and hopefully one day I can use it. If you decide to do it make sure you take lots of pictures.

I don't like the light output pattern. The color is fine. I want to be able to do this:

Any guesses as to the size of the lenses on the projectors in the ones you have? Can you tell if they are 2.5" or 3"?

I'm very tempted, but I'm not sure if the ebay projectors are sonically welded shut or glued. If they're sonically welded no amount of oven baking is going to open them up.

eBay projectors are always bolted onto the projector bracket within. Off the top of my head the following projectors will fit without major work:

1. E46 single xenon ECE - direct drop in (drill new holes on bracket to mount)
2. MDX
3. TSX
4. S2000
5. *pretty sure due to dimension* RX330 will fit too

Dr. Roy and another member from Hawaii had write ups, search around the form I'm sure you'll find it.

Thanks for the pointers. I found one of Dr. Roy's threads here and his write up here.

Based on his pictures the included lens appears to be a 3", and he put in a 2.5" MDX projector.

By my estimation I should be able to put the TRS FX-R Bi-xenon Projectors into the ebay housings without a ton of fabrication effort. I need to work out how I can either reuse the existing ballasts, or how to connect new ballasts to the factory wiring.

I've got the fx-r bi-xenon's in my 00-01 oem's (got the parts from TRS.) The ebay proj housing should definitely fit one of their proj's. You could give TRS the measurements and they'll recommend a set.

I'm a little fuzzy on the wiring. It doesn't look like I can easily re-use the factory ballasts. Will the factory harness in my 02 Maxima plug directly into the wiring on the Ebay housings?

I don't want to modify the harnesses in the car. I want something that will plug into the factory harness that I can hack on instead.

I think the wiring on the ebay types are plugin for 00-01 harnesses. For the 02 you'd definitely have to hack.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to though lol

In the 5th great picture thread I'd have sworn I saw a member's car with retroed 5.5 lights. Wish I remembered whom

Yeah, you're right. I finally found a close up of the connectors here. The low beam connector is very different. I'm not sure about the 2nd connector on the ebay lights. FWIW, the 2k2's have 3 connectors.

I wonder where I can get the mating connectors to the 2002 factory wiring harness. This keeps looking like a bigger and bigger pain in the butt.

Since your stock 5.5's already have high-beams you could try the single xenon (low-beam). It might simplify it. I had to go bi-xenon b/c the 00-01's only have one reflector bowl.

Don't know if it'll help any, but if you don't want to hack your existing harness you could buy a separate 2k2/3 harness and hack it (and perhaps just tap in).

(part number's in there somewhere^)

I'm not sure that going single xenon really helps me much. I really want to totally change the behavior of the lights and I really need bi-xenons to do that. It looks like I need to tap into the existing harness.

I want halogen high beams connected and working so they can be used to flash if the headlights are off. But, I only want the high beams to flash. Currently, the HID's turn on to flash (to the extent that they can) when the headlights are off and you pull back on the stalk. When the headlights are on I want the halogen high beams to not work when flashing or when the brights are on because the bi-xenons will handle that. This is going to require some thought and clever wiring to make this all work.

I blew two fuses using Dr. Roy's circuit design. I found a better design which allows me to flash or run my high beam with my low beams (HID projectors).

The one thing I don't understand is why you want the projector to be the low and the high. 5.5 gen headlight design is a two bulb setup. But i guess it's a matter of personal preference. If you really want a bi-xenon hid projector setup, review Dr. Roy's cardomain site. I know he retrofitted a 00/01 oem headlight with bi-xenon projector. Great handy work but it looked kinda weird with the projector sitting in the middle of the reflector bowl.

Thanks for the link

Well the HID's have a better color of light, and they're brighter so why not use them?

I think I will use P channel and N channel FETs instead of relays.
