Custom Air Intake

Hi,

I know there's a lot of thread talking about air intake but I want to show you what I've made because I never saw something similar. Let me know what you guys think.

p.s. I know that I have to finish correctly the fiberglass section. I took those picture just before I stored the Max for winter.

thx for your comment

That appears to be a great idea. Nice fabricating...

Only concern I would have, did you leave the weird factory tubing on the lower portion of the intake or create a barrier or something to prevent the rush of water into that intake during rainy day, I would venture that it would get sucked up in the filter and potentially the intake if not.

Yes, there's a portion in the bottom of the fiberglass piece to prevent water.

Yep, that sure is creative. I'd hazard a guess that we've all eyeballed that OEM funnel arrangement at one time or another, wondering if it could play ball with a short-ram. (Mine's in a bag in the attic.)

I think you know the only real answer is taking your car to a tuner shop and run the numbers with & without. If you even get a 1hp bump, you've got a winner. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Nice skills, though. Very nice.

That's what I like to see. New and creative ideas. I know it's hard to come up with new ideas for 7 year old cars but great job!

Really cool idea. I always thought about this. With a short ram, where does the air come from? Since the cone is behind the battery, wouldn't it be sucking warm air from inside the engine bay, and if so, isn't the stock air intake more efficient due to the air that's being sucked in from outside cooler?

Yes, with a short tam it take warm air but the main difference between stock and ram is the air restriction.

I have a similar setup. I modified my stock air box instead to hide the cone inside of it.

you should patent this idea and offer to do it for other peoples intake for a small charge. (if there is a notable diffrence of course)

I don't mean to take away from the creative effort, but I'm thinking the only reason the stock airbox manages to draw air from that little slit at the edge of the hood is because of the negative pressure in a closed system. Wide open like this, and there's nothing to pull air down this customized funnel. And it's very doubtful there's any forced air coming through the front. Moreover, that curved plastic wrap around half of the filter element is probably reducing the efficiency of the pop-charger.

I understand the intent, and respect the effort, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

I've always wished that the box was big enough for that....show us your handy work please.......kinda like the S2000 intake box!

Yeah. I thought about that and I agree with you. I did not feel any difference by doing that. What I did was basically cut the rear section of the air box with a dremel and my cone filter is small enough to go right inside of it.

Its nice to see people still doing mods/coming up with new things that require more than 30 minutes of effort. Usually I check the 5th gen section every month or so and I see similar topics about LED light strips, ebay parts, and gas mileage threads.
