water pump replacement question.

so i found an awsome write-up http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...teup-pics.html on relacing the water pump on the VQ30 motor, but one question i haven't been able to find an answer to..

when after remving the timing chain tensioner and moving the crank pulley back counterclockwise, won't the cams " jump " teeth? i mean what's holding tension on the valve springs/cams that don't allow the cams to " jump " timing?

i have done V6 timing chain replacement before, but i have never encountered a chain driven water pump before.

here is an example.

so i'm not a stranger to timing chains i just don't understand the VQ chain design...

thanks guys

I did it that way and didn't have a problem. I just made marks on the crank pulley and the engine so I can move it back to the original position.

cool, thanks man, i wasn't sure if tere were any gearheads on.

so pretty much make a mark on the crank pulley at the 12 o'clock position to keep track of how far back and forth to move the crank pulley.

sounds easy enough

IIRC, I made a mark on the 6 o'clock position. Then another one to align with, right on the timing chain cover, just to make sure I would bring the pulley right back to the original position. Finally I just marked where the 20 degrees counterclockwise would be.
