Lost Car Key at Work
So, normal day at work today until it was about 10 minutes to clock out and I decided to get my keys out only to realize my car key was missing I went crazy looking for it without luck. Any who, long story short... I have to get another key made and since its programmed, i know my last smartest choice would be to get in touch with the Stealership. Do you guys know if they normally do mobile-service? I had to leave my car at work and have someone drive me home. I called the nearest Nissan Dealer but Parts was closed. Around how much will this cost me? What are your guys' opinions on calling a locksmith instead? Thanks

Doubtful man, it sUck0rz but you need to get the vehicle to the Stealer.
From the FSM:
Requires CONSULT II and the NATS program card. If you know someone with a CONSULT II and the NATS program card who would come to you, PLEASE tell me haha. I'd love to get my hands on a CONSULT II.

Hope this cheers you up. I took on replacing my fuel filter (2002 Max) and after pulling the fuel pump fuse, starting engine 6 times until it would not crank I thought OK fuel system pressure is 0, lets pull the fuel line.
Whhooossh I almost took a bath in gasoline inside my car with the rear seat cushion removed.
But I still swapped the fuel filter, got everything back together and the Max still drives!

Haha damn that sucks
I wonder how I'll sleep knowing I'm 25 miles away from my car. It's placed in West Los Angeles. Not the best place for a car to be left unattended. I hope it's still in one piece when I get to work tomorrow.

Did you look inside the car to see if maybe your keys are on the floor?
I had to leave my car in Rancho and drive 5 drunk co-workers home, and sleep on someones couch in Anaheim. I know how separation-anxeity feels!

it might be worth it to try calling a locksmith. i dont know if they can make a key without anything to go off but my spare chipped key cost $65 if i remember correctly. i think the going rate at the stealership is $200

I flipped my car upside down looking for that key lol it was broken so I couldn't hang it from my key chain. At least I still have the remote to open the doors. You've been around here in Cali?

Born in Torrance, CA and lived in Corona CA until July 2008
It's after the fact but what helps me is trying to recall the last moment where you knew you had the key and retrace your steps, what you were doing, thinking, talking about, with who. Hopefully you get that AHHHHH HHHAAA the key is here moment!

2000+ Maxima has microchip ID keys which are programmed at the dealer to work with ONE car. Another 2002 maxima key could open the drivers door, but the engine will not start without my key.

this is the reason i got a spare key made and it sits in my safe. It's a nightmare if you lose your only key. It is nice knowing nobody can just hotwire your car but things like this can happen

Now I have a KARR alarm system which only confuses me more but then again I'm beat up from fighting with my fuel filter, so I could be 100% wrong.

might want to think about getting a spare if money isnt too tight. it should be a lot less than the first. $180-200 sounds like a pretty good deal considering you are starting with no key

I'll get a spare key done when I get my taxes and carry it in my wallet. I'm working on a Fixed Gear Bike but this will put a halt on my proect I just don't want to get my car to the dealership because they'll somehow come up with "We took the liberty or replacing your transmission, that will only be $3000"
#22
I'm still going to say to duplicate the microchip ID key you need a working key in the first place. The dealer is going to match a new key and it's ID into your ECM. I'd take that new key and pay to get a duplicate made outside the Stealership.

Got my car back in my house now. The locksmith came and took my trunk key hole out and made a mold out of it I guess and programmed it for $200. He was charging $180 + $60 for programming But, I told him that I only had $200 on me and told him, come on! It's a rainy day. Hahah it worked

Dang that is one steep price for a lost microchip key. Excuse me, I'm off to the stealer to get a spare made
Good to know it all worked out, minus spending the cash. Just don't kick anything if you find your old key!

So there we go, part of my tax refund is going to get me a new spare ignition key and cheapo 2002 front calipers, rotors, and pads.

I have two keys for 1999 both are 'chip' keys, but neither are the original Nissan key... so keys are available, as for programming, most locksmiths can do it, shop around as the prices vary a lot.

That's right. My key is an Ilco. I am still curious of how much this would cost at a dealership.

I bought my 2k used and all I got was one Nissan chipped key which would not open the trunk (it wouldn't fit in the slot). I bought 2 chipped keys through the internet (non-Nissan) and had them cut and programmed at a local locksmith. I paid $15 for each key, and $20 each for cutting and programming, i.e., $75 (with s&h) total for 2 keys. The locksmith used a Dell laptop to hook-up into my car to program the car to the keys, not a CONSULT tester, so that means there is a software program out there.
What I learned in the process:
I found an ACE Hardware store that claimed they could make me a key. They had a machine that "reads" the code from an original key and then programs a new key. This process is called cloning and is not used by Nissan. The chip in the Nissan key is "RFID" meaning the code is built in and not changable. The Nissan has to be taught to accept the RFID code of that key (just like the key fobs).
The Nissan ignition key is thicker than the valet key, that is why it won't fit into the trunk lock. Most hardware store replacement keys (besides not having the chip) are the thinner valet keys. The 2 chipped keys I bought off the web are the thinner ones and will go into the trunk lock and open it, which is fine by me because I don't have to carry the extra key.
