So this is the 4th ignition coil pack i will be replacing in the past 4 weeks.
It seems like every single week a coil pack goes bad. I replaced the #6,5,4, & 3 already ! What gives??? I only saw the silver dot on one of the coils, and who knows when that one was replaced.
anyone know if the coils have been " updated " or will they fail again in a specific amount of time?
reason why i ask is because Advance Auto Parts only warranties them for 1 year, and at 60-70 bucks a pop isn't exactly the cheapest part...

Some people are lucky enough to just replace one coil pack and they can go on with the rest of them not going bad. When one of mine went down I started replacing all of them as money permitted, even if the rest hadn't failed. My take was that I would prefer the car running with a complete new set rather than having a new coil here and old ones there. I eventualy replaced all of them and they all turned out to be the updated ones. I found out that, on the aftermarket ones, the gray dot is hidden under a silver sticker. They even have what it looks like the nissan "burger" shaved off the stems (perhaps they come from the same manufacturer that makes the ones for Nissan and they shave them off for copyright issues, IDK). I bought them from Autozone and Amazon. Hopefully I won't have to replace them again in, at least, 10 more years.
yeah i hope that if these go bad they will in the next 2-3 years, even that would be acceptable to me considering i have been replacing one just about ever week or other week. i mean it would be so bad if it was a 4 cylinder or if the coils were $40-50 each.....i hope the aftermarket companies had either redesigned them or taken the redesign from Nissan and manufatured them that way.
PINK dot???.. Does that mean that the ones with the gray dots are something like 2nd generation coils?
There's probably an aftermarket supplier who makes them. I have been into a coil pack manufacturing plant and I can understand what it takes to make them. Very expensive machines doing the wiring or primary and secondary. They do quality work.

very true, i don't get charged a core i just toss the old ones out since they are no good.
i'd like to open one up to see what exactly goes bad in the coil itself.
and i hope that the newer coils with the silver dot, silver sticker or pink dot have had the problem fixed ( so coils don't go bad within a week )...
well, thats interesting , but it looks nothing like my coil packs.
mine have a skinny boot that is detachable and has a long spring that runs inside the rubber boot to coil. I will have to dig up and old one and take a pic of it, but mine looks nothing like the pics posted.
