ECU Software Update

I just spoke with my mechanic about my car's inability to shift smoothly between 1st and 2nd even after replacing the valve body for a 2nd time. He suggested I try a software update for the ECU. Apparently there was a mass update covering several Nissan/Infiniti models with numerous fixes - one being transmission timing.

Does anyone know anything else about this? My shop said they could update my ECU for $100 ($25 in labor + $75 for the software from Nissan).

Seems like a TCM update or replacement might be better. Why did you replace the VB the first time?

Transmission was slipping badly. The dealer decided to replace the valve body when it was under warranty - twice. It fixed the slipping temporarily both times, but obviously never actually fixed the problem. (As far as replacing anything, I'm only prepared to throw another $100 at the car at the moment.)

By TCM... you mean Transmission Control Module, right? (Not familiar with this one. I'll make sure they check this out, too. Thanks!)

Could you elaborate? Was it direct fit, no trip to the dealer? Was it worth the trouble?

Well, took it to the shop this morning, and they searched their tech sites for an hour looking for the update and ultimately called the dealer - found out that originally, there was a mass update for all Nissans/Infinitis at one point, but in 2007, they decided to seperate updates into Nissan updates OR Infinti updates, and for whatever reason, they no longer offer the update for the I35. My mechanic did try to install the updated Maxima software (which is available, and should have fixed everything), but his computer wouldn't let him due to my car not being a Maxima. The dealer can do it, but wants $350. My shop was charging $100 - which pretty much covered the software and $20 in labor).

****.

That's what my mechanic said. The dealer is beinc stingy with the software and lied their asses off, saying it would only be available from the dealer @ a 300% profit to the dealer, so F it, I'll live with a crappy transmission until I can sell this thing.

If you can concisely repeat exactly what you want done, then spread your net a little wider. Find a Nissan or Infiniti dealership that will do it for reasonable cost, even if it means taking a little road trip. If you're sure this is the fix, it would be worth the effort. Some shops will aggressively cater to your business, and some will just go by the book. It depends on the management.

Don't give up. Set a goal and make it happen.

NWP block plate (search, lots of threads) raises the shift point on automatics. Mine was upshifting at around 6100 rpms before the block plate, immediately after installing it my car was shifting at 6400-6500. Not sure why but others have noticed it too. At $40 for the engraved version, that's the cheapest way other than simply manually shifting your car.

I need to do a little assessment of this. I have an SSIM, and m,ine still shifts where it's supposed to. But I still have a functioning solenoid/vacuum/etc.

I'm thinking the higher shift points might be related to that end of it, since mine is still the way it was before I added the SSIM. So, perhaps this weekend I my in fact set-up my solenoid etc. to mimic that as if I had said block plate and see what happens.

Hell, I should spend the time purchasing and installing the Suprastick Lazy/cheap me.
