ive always wondered smoething about my car.. how bad is it flooring the gas pedal? for example say your trying to get on the highway and as u see an open space you floor it to get to a high enough speed then you return the gas pedal to normal once u get to that speed? would it harm the tranny? i also heard every once and a while doing it helps with the engine removing little sedaments is that true?

 

Any time you put the pedal to the floor, be it auto or manual, it's abusive and can cause damage.

This is basic knowledge...

You never know. I've seen people baby cars and the first time they punch it, they crack a block, blow a rod, etc. But I've also seen people who dog on their cars and never, ever have a single issue.

But do what you feel like. It's your car, after all.

I'm rough on my car from time to time. But I don't flat out abuse it.

I don't see why it's an issue. The main reason I keep buying a Nissan is b/c the odds of breaking it are slim to none (as long as it's maintained obviously, which is little and get rid of bull**** like cats).

I redline my car dozens of times daily, slam it into gear, etc without worry. If I wanted to worry I would've bought a domestic (yes, I'm a profound hater, deal with it ).

Drive it like you want. That's why you bought the car. If you're afraid to drive it, then sell it.

I'm not trying to be a ****, but that's my .02. The engine and to a lesser extent, the car itself, was designed to be performance orientated. 171k on the this one and I rip it as if it was gonna blow up tomorrow. But it won't haha

 

If you punch it and break something, you'll know long before you get home and shut the car off. Trust me...

Oh, it's okay. My MAF went out on a one-lane highway, trying to pass a van over the dashed lines. I lost all my power and had to limp past him into oncoming traffic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rough on my car, too, at times. Just be prepared for the potential consequences...

 

haha ever since then i pray before i start my engine in the mornign =P i'm gonna go get my 100k maintenance at the end of the summer hopefully i dont get a list of other things to fix

 

I never drive a car like I stole it... I drive it like I bought it. - I hit at least 70MPH daily, I drive in heavy traffic on the way home, and the air is always on in my car.

Well my take on this is.....There isn't anything to worry about when running @ WOT if you maintain your vehicle the way it is suppose to be maintained....I drive my 03, 90, and HB p'up pretty aggressively and really love 1/3 - 2/3 throttle when on the street, especially in the cammed vehicles because thier midrange power is so awesome.....I do drive my 03 like an old lady now and then, but it's hard not to tip into that throttle when you know what beast is lurking under the hood!

Go thru it and visually inspect everything you can now.....this is good practice to do before you purchase any car and most used cars lots will allow you to do this....We called this a 115 point inspection and most reputable repair shops should be able to perform this inspection or similar for you b4 you purchase it....

 

I disagree. I've always revved the bags off the cars I've owned, any car ever, and I've never had any issues with any of them, driveline, or engine.

Do it, just floor it whenever you want, and keep up on maintenance... I think a good blend of some WOTs under load and some tame driving are a good balance that the car needs to be clean inside.

 

+1. The way I see it, it's like giving the car a workout. Just like how people need exercise, engines do too. At least that's what I tell myself when I'm driving spiritedly.

 

It had most of the mods when I bought it at 154k mi, but yeah: 2003 6spd SE ME TE, I/H/test/E, SSIM, NWP Spacers, flywheel, UDP, motor mounts, 300ZX BBK, walbro pump, 6k (I think) fogs/rewire, and G35c rims. I'd call it fairly beat up exterior wise from the mileage and crappy 2002+ paint, though. Worthless stock ECU. I haven't got around to trying a better resistor for the IAT (b/c I'm a bum) to trick the ECU, but I removed it and my power has been MUCH better. Temps have been 95-100+ on the road and power is at least consistent now and it doesn't drive like a civic. So F the IAT and stock ECU. Screw you and your lies about the IAT not doing anything, nissan. I use mobil1 oil and filter and redlline MT90.

 

Even though everyone made good posts, I think everyone missed something important. We all know the VQ can handle WOT runs all day.

The OP has an automatic. When you floor an auto from a roll, it downshifts of course. When the auto downshifts during WOT, it builds heat. Alot of heat. Heat is what kills most automatic transmissions.

To the OP, what you're describing is "normal driving" You have nothing to worry about. People put their car through way more abuse than that and have no problems.

I guess I was mostly talking from a manual viewpoint . But I did have a '00 auto maxima with 125k miles and she drove like brand new. I gate shifted her like a maniac Best max made, imo.

 

I floor my auto everyday even though since I've bought it it has trans issues and i still floor it all the time, these cars can take it trust me if you see how i drive mine you'll understand how much these cars can take.

 

Try a couple of neutral drops and see what happens.

 

LoL aha. im a aggressive driver so im pretty much always slamming my foot on the pedal lol especially when its open straigh away aha i love the pull i get when it downshifts to pick up speed, but when getting on highway im in 2nd then manual shift up to D w/ overdrive off

I think its good to floor it sometimes i did it for the first time 2 weeks ago and discoverd that i need a new cat cause half way down the road all i could smell was rotten eggs.btw i've been driving my 2003 under 80mph sence the day it was fresh out the dealership

 

Common sense - if you floor it from a stop without traction you are tearing up the axles and transmission. Redlining the engine makes the automatic bleed . . .

The engine is made to be floored - be mindful of what you are doing to the whole car

A marine mechanic (with many decades of experience) told me that the police run their machinery hard - and experience way fewer repairs than users who baby their engines. I think keeping them clean by running them hard keeps rings unstuck and generally keeps carbon from building up and causing all kinds of problems

 

btw would manually shifting the auto from 1-2 - d be harmfull to the tranny?

 

its a NISSAN...shift it the way you want it

 

Flooring the pedal is abuse for not just the tranny, it is abuse all across.
I wouldn't floor even a rented vehicle let alone a personal one, its just me!!!

uhm personally i say yea from experience because i shift it at a higher rpm

i asked a nissan tech & he said no but to each his own i've been doing it often, mainly most of the time i drive LoL my car has 172,XXX miles & i drive it, i dont let it drive me lol i enjoy it, no problems what so ever

Theres nothing wrong with flooring it every so often. Helps to keep the carbon buildup down. You know whats worse for the car? Starting it and driving it cold, for a short distance and then shutting it off without warming it up.

As for the automatic trans, Ive got 56k on mine and I have not a single problem with the 2-3 flare or any sloppy shifting. Then again, I keep up on maintenance and Ive changed the trans fluid 4 times since I got the car @ 23k miles.
