Fuel door misalignment

Fuel door misalignment
So I went to pump gas today and didn't notice anything different about opening or closing the fuel door....but as I drove off...I look in the side mirror and notice that the fuel door is not sitting flush with the body of the car....I thought that I just didn't close it but when I checked it....it was closed but sticking out past the body of the car about a 5th of an inch or so( the side of the fuel door pointing towards the front of the car).....WTF???...so after messing around and oiling the hinge and taking the door off.....the shiznit won't sit flush with the body.....
Has this happened to any of you guys and how did you fix it.....I am a bit annoyed because I dented the fuel door a bit as I was messing with it and trying to force it flush with the car body......
As always guys and gals....any input would be wonderful....THANKS!
PS....I tried a search before opening this thread but nothing popped up...

omg yes it has happened and is still annoying me to this day because i have the dents too! I have been looking forever for a fuel door for my car and come up with no results. I go to the junkyard and the fuel doors on the cars there are dented too.

The thing is that nothing feels loose in the door or the hinge and I am sure that I didn't bend anything before this happened.....thus I am baffled as to what shifted to cause this weird shiznit to happen

I think I know what is wrong with the fuel door now....there is some piece of metal that is clipped to the inside of the fuel door (near the back end) that is supposed to slide along the inside fixed portion of the fuel door bracket and then snap over its edge (this will allow it to sit flush with the body of the car).....well for some odd reason it stopped sliding all of the way and does not snap over the edge.....thus the fixed portion of the fuel door bracket is pushing the front end of the fuel door forward and out and this is what is causing it to not sit flush with the body.......I tried bending that bracket back and forth but it either results in the fuel door not opening or opening fine but STILL does not sit flush with the body of the car.... WTF WTF WTF.... ....guess I'm gonna have to buy a new door then!

yeah i began to notice this problem as well. then one day the hinge broke and i couldnt open the door .thank god i have a long wing span because i used to have to open my fuel door while i held the button down inside the driver door. about a month or so later i finally found a decent junk yard door/hinge and replaced it...i recommend replacing the entire assembly before these embarrassing gas fill ups happen to you

My fuel door is bent also. My wife was driving the car and SAID SHE DID NOTHING WRONG. I thought it she had a blonde moment but i see alot of you have the same problem. The more I tried to fix it the more it god worse. I have a 94 accord and the fuel door is perfect.

+1 Had same problem with this rinky dink fuel door for about 5+ years now. Tried to mess with it and ended up bending a bit. Finally just got to the point where I just don't even pay attention to it! Seems like the hinge gets warped or something!

I had same problem here. Once, gas station attendant in Jersey felt it was open even tho it was closed and decided to hit it hard, and i think he bent hinges. So for few months my fuel door was completely misaligned and needed some roughing up to close every time it was used. On top of that hinges screws were so rusted that I couldn't even take off fuel door. Now, after few months in winter my dad decided to hit it hard when it wouldn't close, and completely came loose and prob. lost the door on highway. Now, I'm riding around with no fuel door, but Locked fuel cap. Embarrassing.
