Panel Filter Options
Panel Filter Options
Ok. So I've been following stuff on the org pretty faithfully since
2008, and haven't seen any opinions of the great org minds
on panel
filters. I realize that intake stuff gets beaten to death, but I'm not
asking about intake types. I'd simply like to hear what some of my
favorite org people have to say about this.
So here we go. I have a GAB'd intake, love it, and fully intend on
sticking with it for a while. I recently switched to a K&N Panel
filter. I can tell my car is breathing better now than with the Nissan paper filters because I can hear it (and maaayybe feel it). Some say oiled filters can be detrimental to MAF life etc, and others claim the contrary. What is the best route to go with a panel filter? Can you get dry-flow versions like the AEM dry-flow cone filters that many use on their SRIs? Would a dry-flow panel filter breathe better than a K&N? Like I said, I really like my GAB intake. It gives a good smooth power curve and much better airflow than the stock airbox. It also sounds amazing, though with my new full Cattman exhaust setup, I can't really hear the GAB as much
. I just would like to make sure I'm getting the most power out of what I have.
Thanks for any input/opinions

GAB = Ghetto Air Box
You basically take the filter holder out and use a bent coat hanger to hold the filter in place. This leaves the top of the airbox open, allowing the car to breathe better. It also sounds amazing. Here's the write-up:

I definitely recommend you try it. Takes like 15 min, and if you don't like it, you can go back to your stock setup really easily. I believe NMexMax had a 9whp gain with the GAB mod. He probably had other mods to support this intake setup at the time (headers, etc.) but still! There will be at least some gain, and the sound is amazing. I know it looks ghetto, but TRY IT!
Here is a pic of my engine bay with the GAB mod and K&N panel filter...

they work better than k&n and they are reusable as well and similar pricing
and they are blue and we all no blue filters = awesome

also it is a dry filter so no overoiling and stuff(less maf failures)

I used the K&N panel filter for a few years before going with a SRI. And I'll be honest, I never noticed a stitch of difference between the OEM panel and the K&N.
Here's another thought: it never made any sense to me, going through the hassle of cleaning cleaning an air filter, panel or otherwise. Just buy a new one.
+1 on the sig photo. Last month, I PM'd the OP with a similar sentiment. One of the best in our forum.

The K&N's like all oil cotton filter let in more dirt than paper stocks but of coarse let in more air. I guess the old adage is true you always have to sacrifice one extreme element for the other in any item. In this particular case it is particle filtration for air flow. I however, would recommend anyone looking for a reusable filter try the AFE Pro DryS they also have a oil filter but I personally like the convenience of vacuuming the filter and popping it in quick fast instead of waiting over night to dry like K&N. The build quality of the AFE is superior and the sound is comparable to a K&N with the GAB mod. You can research the AFE Filters at: http://www.afepower.com.
