Stock for stock..
4thgen 5spd will pull on a 5thgen auto..
5thgen 5spd will pull on a 4thgen auto..
5thgen auto vs 4thgen auto?!!...
4thgen will have the advantage in the 1/4mile but in an all out race, 4thgen will top out b4 a 5thgen..
4thgen 5spd vs 5th gen 5spd?? Believe what you wanna believe!!.... IT all depends on the driver!!!
End of story!!!...

OK, here goes my two cents...
1) What we need is ten each of identical (Auto vs Auto, 5sp vs 5sp, SE vs SE, etc.) stock 4th and 5th gens for a total of 20 cars. 10 of each should help to reduce the statistical anomilies caused by some cars being "stronger" or "weaker" from the factory.
2) Each car then runs the 1/4 mile for a total of 20 runs.
3) Then each driver takes one run in each of the remaining 19 cars. This will account for driver differences. We now have a total of 400 runs (I think my math is right there!)
4) Then we sum the 4th gen times and divide by ten, then do the same for 5th gens. This will give us an average time for each gen.
Viola!! We will have a winner. All we need is a good day that has relatively constant weather.
I know, I know...this would be almost impossible to do, but at least it should give a relatively reliable (ie, mathimatically correct) result. Please don't flame me

Hey, you and I don't have to worry. We have AE's which, due to the chrome sills and magical downward pointing muffler tips, are faster than all the others.
DISCLAIMER: I do not have a videotape to prove this, but I do have a piece of paper that says so.

OK anyways, Heres how I see it. At first I thought my SE 5th gen was faster than my GLE 4th gen, but the more I drove it, the faster my 4th gen felt off the line.. at high way cruising speeds, I think my 5th gen is faster. Then again its all butt dyno. By the way, I dont care which car is faster. They have the same engine, one has more horsepower, and weighs more. Plus, the 5th Gen autos shift before max power, so I do believe the 4th gen can be faster. Hell, my Tranny shifts at 6k... how great is that? Max power is at 6600, and no way I can past that and land back into a good torquecurve/powerband... So, Whatevers, I dont care, Ones faster by .1, big woop, I can't tell which one is faster anymore, so 4th=5thgen in whoever is faster. 4th gen can land back into the "sweet" spot of a torque curve better than a 5th gen auto can... a Manual MIGHT be faster than a Manual 4th gen on a roll, but again, Argueing about this is ghey IMO.

Ive seen time slipps for 5th gen autos ranging from 15.4(me)all the way to 16.3 so It all depends on the car and the driver!!!!
I have a friends w/ a 97 gle auto. He has a custom cattback w/ universal muffler and a stillen intake. About a month ago we met up and had 10 or so races. We started on the interstate. To even add more defense to the 5th gen being faster my brother was in my car w/ me and he was alone w/ his 130 pound scrawny a$$. On the interstate my bro did the count down while we were side by side I PULLED AWAY EVERY TIME. We got to city streets and had about 6 or 7 red light races. Guss what? I WALKED HIM EVERY TIME (not by much but I still walked him. He did beat me one time...he took off before the light was even green(bastard!). And to be totally fare he has 90,--- + miles and I have around 37,000.

I posted the time slips about a week and a half ago. The thread is titled "2000 auto track times". So overall according to that, 5th gen autos are faster. Right?

Uh, OK. But the whole point is to say the 4th and 5th gens are equally fast. That hasn't been disproven yet.
