big maf tuning

This is my fancy drawing from info the FSM's have given for terminal designation.
Apparently the IAT sensor uses Terminal #5 as 5v supply, and #3 as return.
However, #3 is also the main ground for the MAFS, so I'm confused how the IAT can return it's signal through it sucessfully.
I'll start from the start:
I'm hooking up an aftermarket IAT sensor, and deleting my MAFS. I want to use the IAT wires that would go to the integral IAT sensor in the MAFS for the aftermarket sensor.
When I hooked up #3 and #5 to the aftermarket sensor, it didnt work. I'm going to test some more today shortly and see if I can figure it out.

So. I am not much further ahead. The FSM seems to change designations between the Maxima's VQ35, the 03 G35 VQ35, and the 04 G35 VQ35.
I have a 5 wire MAFS, but the 04 G35 FSM shows a 6 wire MAFS. 2 dedicated to the IAT.
Mine seems to share a common ground with the IAT, hence, only 5 wires.
This is confusing. I found a 5V reference and used the common ground for the other wire. With a 470k resistor installed temp showed 70* C, sweet, so I hook it up to the sensor, it reads -11* C, which is how cold it is outside!!!
SO I wire it all up, thinking it's good, and run the car. Well, the temp doesn't change.... Even as it gets hotter in the bay, I even pumped hot air at the inlet with a heat gun and nothing changed.
I'm not convinced it's not working, but I'm getting the general feeling it isn't. More testing to come I guess, either way I'll step out of this thread, just thought you guys might have more info on the MAFS plug wiring, etc
