Locked keys in the car....AGAIN

So i've only had my maxima a little over a week, and this is the second time that i've locked my keys in her. I cleaned out my radiator, and started the car to warm it up, got back out to inspect the radiator, and lo-and-behold, my door was closed and locked when I went to get back in.

Is it a stock feature of this car to lock when you start it? Or is this because of an aftermarket alarm? It does have remote start installed, and I am wondering how to disable this "feature" - do i need to do something with Consult-II, or should I pull the after-market alarm out?

Seriously, auto-locking doors is the stupidest feature ever invented. It doesnt prevent someone accidentally opening a car door when moving (try it - lock the door, and try to open it from inside - works just the same as if it wasnt even locked!)

Luckily I can make use of my AT&T roadside assistance to get back in for free(that is the only thing they are good for, I would NEVER rely on this service for an actual emergency)

I usually keep an extra key at home or in my wallet. But my 91 has keyless entry that's gonna save my hide one day :/ Might be worth the hassle to have a second key around.

ive done that tons of times. go and get one of those magnetic key holders. they dont really stay on well by themself so i use ducttape and find a nice spot no one would think to look. Saved me many times.

If you know this will happen, just roll down the window..... When you lock it, some insurance companies will pay for a towing company [aka me ] to come to your house and open the door. Some cars I've towed have this happen, so when weather permits, I leave the drivers side window down......

Yeah, I should have done that, but forgot to...I just got the car and only have one key. Ordered another one so hopefully I can prevent being locked out again. I am also going to disable that dang alarm, and go back to a stock configuration.

as mentioned, when working on the car, roll the windows down

i locked the keys in my car twice
1st - came out of walmart and popped the trunk, set the keys down in the trunk, loaded everything up, closed trunk

2nd - working on car, keys in floorboard, somehow stepped on the fob and locked it, closed the door

you can get a key made without a chip and hide it somewhere under the car ,,it won t start the car but can open the door or trunk ,,,good for those with repeated lockouts,,saves time for callin for assistance

Do you have to get the key without a chip made from nissan? Pretty sure they are going to have a crazy high price for it.

No it should be cheaper and you don't have to get it at nissan

I was so happy today when I was able to get keys cut for a few dollars a piece. I was told by the previous owner that the 3rd gen keys where chipped and it would be really pricey. So now I have 3 keys stashed all over! One hidden in the car, one at home and one on the ring. Funny thing was I drove past somebody who had locked their keys in an Altima on my way.

Sort of like carrying the valet key on a separate ring or keeping a separate key in your wallet (if it'll fit there - keys are getting pretty big these days), why not just put the fob on a different ring that you also always keep with you? You realize just how utterly pointless it is to have the main key and the fob on the same ring once you've managed to lock both of them in the car.

Best to plan on locking yourself out of any car, apartment, or house that you ever have. Sooner or later it'll happen.

Don't be like one of the guys I work with, who is apparently so vain about his clothes that he refuses to keep anything "extra" in his pants pockets for fear that the small bulge will "look bad". He'd rather call AAA or a locksmith than plan ahead to deal with it himself. I'm not making this up.

I used to work as an EMT, and on the ambulances, we had them set up so there were some really well hidden buttons that you could press to unlock the doors. They were put somewhere that it was possible to hit them without anyone noticing, so we used to routinely lock the keys in the truck(couldnt put them in the pocket, the key ring had so much **** on it, it wouldnt fit in a pocket), then just use the button to unlock when we were loading the patient.

Might have to do a similar mod to my Maxima.

My 280ZX used to lock me out fairly regularly (last door close, 3 seconds later - doors lock alarm sets)... That was from the factory that way (dang car talked too... )

On the Maxima, it's the aftermarket alarm, as that autolock is not included with our 'anti-theft' system...

If you want to fix the root cause check into the aftermarket alarm. I'm sure there is a setting you can modify to not have it auto-lock the doors.

As mentioned before, go with the cheap cut key and get a magnetic key holder to place it somewhere on your car. Despite what someone else says they hold really well when place on full metal contact like the inside of a bumper.
