hid bulb turned violet

I have a 2002 maxima, and the other day i noticed that the passenger hid bulb has turned a purplish color. When i turn the light on the bulb seems to flicker 3 or 4 times, starts off as a normal whitish blue then 3 seconds later it turns a violet color. Could it be just the bulb, or the ballast? Also if it is the bulb what size would i need? Thanks for your help.

mETHINKS your bulb is cooked!
I believe they are D2R bulbs, but somebody else may be more certain than I.

Easiest way (and I'm not sayin' this is easy) to know for sure, whether it's the ballast or the bulb, is to swap the Vilolet (bad) bulb over to the other lamp (the good one) and see how it reacts.

If it ignites and burns normally, it's the ballast. If violet: it's a bad bulb.

As far as replacing the bulbs/ballasts -- you need to search, there's ALOT of information out there, and it's mostly up to you and how much you want to spend.
i'd suggest replacing both BULBs at one time tho -- or they'll be different colors.

Yes, replace both bulbs. If you want to go OEM, you can get new OEM replacements for about $70 for the pair off of ebay. The dealer will want $200 for the same bulbs.

Dumb question but, if i wanted to go with 6000k or 7000k would it be ok? Or would i damage the ballast.

Makes no difference to the ballast!

Personally I wouldn't go any further than 6000k -- and even THAT is a bit too blue, really.
It's been said MANY MANY times before, but 4300k most closely emulates DAYLIGHT.
This is the OEM temp, btw.
Any further "up" the color shift and you aren't technically improving your Light output.

I totally agree. For best light output, you cannot beat OEM.

I have 6k in my fogs, simply b/c it was the lowest color available in h3c at the time I purchased.
I'd prefer the 4300k, if for no OTHER reason, than to MATCh the OEM lamps.
But a little extra light output would be nice too!

I have 5300k x 3 in my motorcycle, and that isn't TOO bad -- nice color, and reasonably decent output.

I'd still stick with 4300k if I could find it, and afford it, tho.

True that, the higher the kelvin, the lower the lumens (visible light onto the road)
