cattman 3 inch catback vs. exhaust cut-out
#41
negative...if you open the switch while u at full throttle it will throurgh the tune off....thats why u tune it with the cut out open the entire time...when chris tried in his car he ran slower times. His best time was with the cut out open the entire run
#42
i dont think its the noise that make you look dumb. keep in mind only a fraction of the HP junkies know the power of the maxima; to everyone else, we look dumb racing a maxima PERIOD.
#43
You cant prove whether something like that works or not without being on a dyno. Chris could have shifted differently on each run or the temps could have gone up or anything. If you can tune it for being open the entire time you can tune it for opening at a certain RPM.

i would have to aggree with paying 700 bones for any catback is ridiculous, especialy looking for 2-3 horses ??? after already spending 500 on a 2.5 inch catback to go to 3 inch??
if you had a stock catback, and making the first time buy, then maybe...
hopefully i can put up dynos by next week of cutout closed vs open, but it will be with a 2.5 inch greddy catback no a 3 inch catback.
people always saying cattman this or greddy that, basically choose the muffler and wether to use a resonator or not, and any mendrel bent system should be the same,, but coming from miami, i can say, that **** up here is freaking mad pricey, you minus well order a cattman if you go to a shop around here, same $$, but you save installation fee by going custom

true...but when it comes to exhaust, shops will always be around.
u gotta pay to play ...yup..true..no argument there..but as for the sake of this argument, cutout should def be more bang for the buck

yea its a lot of exhaust shops but how many do mandrel bent exhaust?.....and how many do a good job????
#51
well, as long as youre there and know what needs to be done, you can always order bends and make sure its done the right way. as far as locally, i personally saw a 3inch get done on a 4th gen last week, and let me tell you , this dude from MBS did a hell of a job, added in an extra hanger and everything , **** is wayyyyy stiffer than any made to oem spec catback outhere, fits better than any off the shelf unit, stainless hangers, stainless welds, now granted it ends up being the same price , just installed as a 700 dollar cattman unit, so no labor involved, but imo better fitment as its made custom on your car. things are just more expensive in some parts then others..
if these catbacks were 500 vs 700 i think alot more people would buy them, and it be more of a well priced item,

If a cutout shows gains on the dyno and not the track then its a fail.............. to the idiot who said ppl look at maxima's different for even racing needs to stfu, have you been to a track??? Motherfcuker they got full size school bus down here racing that will kick everbody's ****... there was a 18 wheeler at the track one time that ran a 14.2.... dude ppl are not surprised anymore of what cars can be fast, especially around here where every max is modded....

Ok, for those of us concerned with all of the relevant issue's let's consider what you're getting when you get a 3in or even a 2.5. Significant gains across the rev range and a prominent growl, although tolerable, during all time spent driving. Prices range from 400-800 including shipping for a high quality stainless exhaust depending on the size of the piping.
With a cut out, the most noticeable positive is the price, with electronic stainless models(obviously what you'd want) going for around 300 bucks up to 400max after installation. With a cut out you get essentially(you can barely tell the difference) the same power gain as you would with your $800 3in at half price, not to mention the stealth aspect at a flip of a switch. And for those of us not so interested in stealth most models offer a midway setting to allow a adequate amount of noise without scaring the neighbors.
I know what i'm getting, and it certainly doesn't involve $800.

I would go with a crush bent 3'' for 400 bucks...but i like hearing my exhaust all the time. It's cheaper and smarter to go with just a cutout. This cannot be argued. A 3'' crushbent is 1/2 the price of the cattman. If you are really worried about the flow go up to 3.5ID or 4ID and spend 500. The difference in power is going to be so little between a mandrel bent and good crush bent exhaust. ESPECIALLY NA. you are talking 1-2hp for the price difference of 400 bucks.
for the price of the cattman everyone should do this: buy used headers for 400, a 3'' crush bent from an exhaust shop for 400, and gain a nice 30HP for 800 bucks.
Untill you have headers/fi a catback honestly is worthless and just for sound. get your headers 1st then think about it. The best way would be to have a stock exhaust with headers and an electric cut out. You can be nice and quiet or loud as **** whenever you want, look stock, and have spent alot less money which you can use on mods.
800 on a catback is a joke.

Custom exhaust can be very pricey as well. You also have to have someone who knows what they are doing. What people seem to forget is the R&D that comes with getting and exhaust from Cattman, sure you can just lslap pipes on a car, but that doesnt mean it will perform well or sound good.
One last thing. There is more to exhaust then horsepower numbers. These catback threads are the new header threads

yup! just went there last month to watch a fellow EVO owner clip 10's with his new setup:
10 sec EVO : )
but on a serious note.....having a fast maxima isnt going to stop ridicule. hell, i still hate old VW bugs. hella fast with a good turbo, but still think their butt ugly.
the pitts are kinda like high school during lunch: you got the mustangs over there in that corner, camaro's over here, Subi's over on the other side , Turbo PT cruiser's little bit farther down...etc. etc..... heck...have YOU ever been to a track?
so much $hit talking there...and yeah...unfortunately, i've surprised a few haters from time to time....still isn't gonna change their minds...
...and feel free to stand up and call me out if i've said something wrong.....no need to start a post with ".....to the person who said this:...".
...don't worry...i ain't gonna drive to MD to knock on your door. motherfukcer!
j/k lol

What I'm saying is, when your at just a dumb est and tune event then who the **** cares what car is running????.... I can understand if you brought the max to a NRA event or suttn like that if u laugh at any car at a test n tune event then you should be laughed at for being a newb but wanting to look experience as the world knows test and tune does mean ish, its just an even for ppl like myself who wants to mod n see time improvements. And also for just anybody to say I have been on the track before and could care less about times.... saw a soccer mom brought her stock rav 4 and ran it.... 15.3@88, you think she really cares about a record or anything???.. so for u saying ppl redicule a maxima for running on the track is not true.....
#64
Any real reasons y u don't prefer the cattman catback other thab the price??...like seriously
I don't mean to discourage anyone though because for what it is, the 5th and 5.5gen Maximas are easily the best of their breed. And if I had designated mine to be solely a pleasure vehicle(and to mod it as necessary), I would definitely invest in the best exhaust system available. But, for those of us who can acknowledge that these nissan sedans are not the ultimate platform, I will take that saved $400 and put it towards my E30 M3 fund.

hey my buddy takes his chevy lumina to the track when they do bracket racing. his car runs 16.7 at 89 and usually makes it all the way to the 3rd round. dam lumina is consistent.
and people dont just ridicule the maxima, they ridicule all types of cars. SoCal has a bunch of haters out here and if you're not driving the new type-s or i-VTEC that , they just like to talk smack.
....just gotta let'm talk...

800 bucks I spent like no problem get the best **** and the right **** and will spend 800 on Cattman Headers to like F33k It and as for that 3.5 or 4in. you talking about I hardly think it will work especially going to the muffler where it goes up then down to the muffler and better believe it feel way more power than stock never bought a mandrel bent one and obviously your Maxima is Not One To Envy!!!

have you ever seen how a crush bent exhaust is made? Its not the best route to go with ours cars because of all the tight bends. trust me....perfect example right here...they will take a 3in pipe (NO HOMO) and measure length. once it gets to the first turn under the car
they are gonna bend it to fit around that turn. Now your 3" exhaust has been crushed to fit and has probably been crushed to 2.25. This is a repeated process until your B.S. exhaust is done. those tight crush bends choke your car. Our exhaust has about 6 or 7 bends in them and some of them reall tight. if im paying for a 3" exhaust, i want a whole 3" exhaust system. Not 3" here....2.5 there and 2.25 here.
your a newbie so i aint gonna waste my time talkin to u......cuz you still missing the point.....this thread is not about the price. thats all you keep cryin about. I swear i have never seen so many car enthusiast cry about the price of a car part in my life. 240sx parts are over price and so is the car...do you hear them crying? ****......Some civic owners gotta pay a **** load of money just because a product may say "JDM".....i dont hear them b!tching either.......So until someone comes up with another reason to pick a cut out or any other exhaust set up over a cattman 3" other than the price let me know

of course some people dont know Mandrel bent exhaust are not good for ur spirit, they carry demonic values. If u have one u will be possessed by the spirit of Micheal Jackson. So get rid of those Mandrels and go Crush bent and be holy.

I'd love an $800 3in stainless cattman exhaust, but for reasons of practicality and logic I never would. There are too many other things I'd like to do to my car before I dumped a huge amount of money into one particular area. And I hate saying this because I do love my Max, but why would I want it to be obnoxious all the time(electronic cutout gives you the choice), it is and will always be a Nissan sedan and if I was really going to invest that kind of money on an exhaust system it'd be on a 911 or any other car designed purely for the sake of driving pleasure.
I don't mean to discourage anyone though because for what it is, the 5th and 5.5gen Maximas are easily the best of their breed. I believe Mandrel bent does have an advantage over crushbent, but 15 whp is have to believe...but I didn't see the severity of the crushbent sections either. I have a crush bent custom exhaust on my DD Hardbody P'up and the exhaust tech used a 2.5" bend shoe instead of the 2.25" bend shoe which is the size of my tubing and the crush bends were distorted very little compared too, if he'd used the proper size bendshoe....I would think on a N/a car maybe 3-6 whp would be gained between using crush bent and mandrel bent tubing, whereas on a F.I. car 10-20 whp since backpressure is so critically sensitive....

clogged exhaust 247whp
crush bent 238whp
fresh mandrel bent 254whp
i havent dynoed with the 3" yet but i know imma put down more...especially since i got more mods
