How many of you DON'T have an active check engine light?

Getting an occasional pending P430 code and once a pending P1147 code. All started when I added a can of Seafoam to the gas last week. Must be cleaning out some nasty stuff in there. Hopefully once I burn through this tank and put some fresh gas in it, I'll be back to code free.
In my other Maxima (the one that got totaled), it had been code free for a good year and a half.

Interesting, cause no-one has checked off the 'I have one but don't know what it is' on the poll....

But after getting my car last September and having replaced clutch, flywheel, power steering pump and now the radiator. I have been giving it Shell plus gas, penzoil platinum oil ,bosch oil filter like clock work every 3k miles. I was throwing codes like I was a quarterback for a living. I let this last oil change run for 4500 miles around the 3000 mark I got no more codes. Gas mileage went up, and I idle smooth as ****. Gotta make up for lost time in our max's if they were used when you got em

I've had the same issue and was thinking about buying new sensor.
After I checked under the car - a bolt broke down (have no idea how it happened). I screwed it out and put a new one in.
So, check front sensors and hope it to be something small...

I had a P0136, turned out to be an o2 sensor...bought a new one (Bosch) and replaced the old one, CEL went out. CEL came back with the same ******* code like 1-2 months later....I am just going to ignore it...

My CEL is on with 0420 and 0430 (cat codes) and has been since I bought my 01 I30 last year. Bought the car at 215XXX miles with the light on, and 21k later, it's still there. I get 24.5 average MPG in 70% highway/30% city driving, so I'm just not going to mess with "good enough". I figure I could spend the $500+ to replace the pre cats, all the O2 sensors, or just live with it. The car's registered in a state with no emissions/smog/safety test, so as my buddy Vinco (fellow .org member and friend) says... FIDO (you place the f) it, drive on.
By the way, the car runs smooth, and I have all the confidence it will run another 100k miles or more. Drive it 52 miles round trip to work every day and 700 miles each weekend, and never worry it will leave me stranded. Just went on a 1500 mile round trip and the car never missed a beat.
I'm convinced if you take care of the car, it will nearly last forever, regardless of the light being on... or not.

i dont have any at the moment.
the only code i have had in the last 6 yrs of ownership was for a throttle body. just out of power terrain coverage. but the service manager at the dealer i went to was good friends with my shop forman at lexus and got the repair covered.

I don't see anything wrong, tombinator, with replacing the faulty cats to ensure it will run another 100,000 miles. Recall that the first ~150K miles were with new, shiny, not failing cats.

It's only shown up three times:
1st time: Didn't seal the gas cap properly.
2nd time: Didn't seal the gas cap properly.
3rd time: Forgot to plug in the MAF sensor.
Other than that 135,000 happy miles with my max.

I bought this car new. At 35K the CEL came on but the car still ran like a top. And it continues to do so to this day at 113K miles. The CEL has been on the entire time.
The code has always been P0420. I tried replacing the O2 sensor several years ago but the light stayed on. I just learned about the plug fouler thing and tried one of those but it is still on.
The CEL has been on so long that the wife and I don't even notice it anymore. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.

After troubleshooting my ignition coils and replacing 2 of them, I've been CEL free for a year and a half.
Previous light was for the exhaust O2 sensor, once that was replaced and codes cleared with the OBDII reader, it never came back.

can you tell me what you did to fix the problem i have an 02 infiniti i35 basically the same thing......the same codes just popped up today and was wondering what you did to fix it and how long did clearing the codes work
thanks

Oh yes, had a few codes over the years, always got them fixed, and have never had a re occuring problem except for my PITA evap problem-- code 1491. Anyone else had this problematic code? I just can't. get the damn thing fixed....

I had a problem similair to this and it was the coil pack they told me it causes the car to miss so the tranny thinks it slipping change the coil pack all lights went away..
Thanks for that tip (nohomo) but my battery/alternator are in good shape.
I assumed it was due to the broken Wheel sensor, and because its Auto, that throws the Trac and Slip light off too? Just made logical sense, I haven't bothered to fix the sensor yet.

I am surprised with the resounding 'NO'.
I'm impressed with the poll results... so far.
Good thread OP.

We've had an eternal CEL and the 0420 code practically since we drove the car off the lot new. It's never been a problem. Car has always run tip-top. We get it scanned every once in awhile, just to make sure some other code hasn't come-up, but it's always the 0420.
As I've explained in other posts (per discussions with Nissan techs), it's a nuisance light/code due to a software mismatch between what the computer expects to see and what the sensors are saying. Call it a false-positive. There's no actual problem and the engine will continue to perform as designed. You just get that eternal CEL. Sort of like there was a mis-communication between the mechanical engineers and the software engineers.

I found your posts to be extremely informative, Thorzdad, when I was researching my '05's P0430--the same code as the P0420, just for the other bank.
But I don't think "miscommunication" between the hardware and software guys is quite accurate, more like the software guys got forced into the murky waters of politics and emissions regulations, and the result is that some cars end up with the wrong formula for determining whether or not the cat is functioning properly. I found it fascinating that Nissan can swap out those algorithms for CA vs Federal emissions cars... That got me thinking down entirely new lines about just what affect all this emissions stuff has on our cars.

No Active CEL, I had the "Slow Response" code intermittently for a few weeks, but two cans of Techron (Magic?) and it's gone.
But no light doesn't mean everything is perfect, Timing chain guides must be whooped by the sounds it's making. Also sounds like Idler pulley (Maybe Harmonic balancer?) bearings are going/gone, that's also making a pretty sweet sound.

I have had three CEL codes since I bought my Max last year.
1. Flashing CEL- one bad coil, but replaced all because they were the originals (only one with a dot)
2. (2) O2 sensors codes- Replaced a pre-cat sensor and after a week a post-cat sensor went out. I replaced all 4 units.
No CELs since the 02 sensor replacements ... knock on wood.

My 2000 had a whole mess of codes (5 to be exact) about two weeks ago, but now it is only showing the awesome 0430. Going to get a sim one of these days...
But, the wife's 02 has been code free since we got it in March!

I have a P430 still... had the TSB reprogram done a few times... it actually goes on and off... first thought it had to do with the gas as we just fill up with the nearest gas which could vary from shell to mobil. have not done the cat or o2 sensors... gas mileage is fine and considering it goes on and off its hard to admit there is an issue.

01 Max, No Light, but code
I think my light gave up on me. If you pull the codes you'll get one for O2 sensor, but the light hasn't come back on in a while now. She's probably due to remind me soon though

When I got an AM600 MAF out of a wrecking yard to replace the original one in my 6MT 6 speed to cure the infamous 6 speed hesitation issue (must have the AM600 for the ECU reflash to work), it greatly reduced the occurrence of the P0430 code I was getting regularly. Went from popping an SES light every 40-100 miles to every 300-600 miles. Not sure why but if you have the original MAF in your car, a new one might buy you enough time in between P0420/0430 SES lights to get your car to pass emissions testing.

I should change my vote.
Been living with a failed secondary O2 sensor for almost two months. I have an O2 SIM installed, but the code is for the temp sensor, not the O2. So I clear it once a week just to make the light go away... but it's not I can pass inspection until I replace the damn thing.
