Dipstick marks: anyone figure how much?

I am curious if anyone has actually determined how much oil it takes to move the fill level from the bottom of the cross-hatched section to the top.

Is it exactly a quart? If so, is it uniform throughout the entire zone on the dipstick. i.e. when you are 1/2 qt low is the oil level in the middle of the cross hatch area?

In a related question, how much does oil level differ based on the vehicle not being on a level surface? Quite a bit, or not a significant difference on a gentle slope?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I believe the low & high marks measure one quart.

Uh, it's a quart. How exact is it? Beats me. My car drinks oil and adding a half a quart when it hits halfway on the crosshatched area yields the line going back to the top of the aforementioned area. Same goes for when the oil has hit the bottom line.
