Pre-cat rattle, clip inside, opinions?

would this be the famous precat rattle??

been doing it for the past 20k miles and its driving me nuts!

saw a guy on here earlier tonight who had his mechanic gut his cats but the rattle was still there...

is this the same sound??

only rattles between 1500rpm-2000rpm

What kind of shape is your y-pipe in. Mine was making that sound when the mesh was breaking loose from the collector

that sounds like a bad rear cat. I just did this a few weeks back on my max, it is a pain of a job to do because of all the rusty bolts and nuts that like to snap off.

piping is all straight and fine... the bolts shouldn't be that hard with mine since I'm down south and with no rust on the car... thinking of gutting... cel is already on for o2 sensor so the hell with it...

gutted all three cats...

the rear is indeed a *****!!

still have that rattle tho...

i did notice that the rear cat had a cylinder on the inside that held the metal mesh into place but i never removed it...

could this be the cause of the rattle or no??

Check the heat shields for a rattle.

I have the same rattle under acceleration. Never went away without cats.

Then I turned up the radio and it went away.

Bump...
Anyone else experience this? My first though was precats so I bought a cheap set that was already gutted. After reading through this thread, it is clear that it isnt the pre-cats... Want to get this resolved as soon as possible but I do not know that to look for since the pre-cats and heatshields are not the source.

I have this same rattle. I was told by the dealership it was the front pre-cat (and they wanted $1500.00 to replace). Bought an Eastman replacement and did myself, removed old one and it looks to be in perfect condition, no rattle. Removed most heat shields (most in good condition, no rattles).

Since I was at it I decided to do the spark plugs, and since tube #5 was coated in silky brown goodness I have not reassembled yet to see if the rattle is gone. (waiting on 6th Gen valve cover - thanks forums!)

After reading the 3 pages associated with the link above it I couldn't come to a complete conclusion on what the problem is. That mysterious rattle when revving down from 3000rpm, or the rattle at idle when the car is turned off.

I'll continue to replace stuff, but I am tired of replacing stuff that isn't past its prime yet. Any definite answers to the posted video above of that rattle would certainly be helpful.

I know I will get this post handed to me but I have to ask. After hours spend searching this exact rattle I have come up with the forums best answers that it ‘could be’:
• Chain tensioners
• Chain guides
• Front pre-cat
• Rear pre-cat
• Rear cat
• Y-pipe
• Heat shield
• AC bearing
• Power steering pulley
Listen, I have searched and searched however there is no definitive answer. I am sure that all of these problems will not yield the same rattle sound as in these video clips. Any help here would greatly appreciated.

Regards

It's so consistent that it must be timing chain related. The other rattles wouldn't be the same each time.

everyone has the same problem but different solutions. My rattle happens right around the same rpms from Idle to 2500 rpms. Only happens when revs drop from listed rpms and from idle to off. It has to be with exhaust gases.

1. I've checked and see if it comes from the tension or accessory pulleys and even timing cover. no noises coming from these locations

2. I've took off my heat shields. no change

3. I've replaced secondary sensors and still get the codes for pre-cats rear and front failure when ever i go on to the highway.

So that has to be my answer. I have 225k on my car it has to be this.

there's no other conclusion to some up. When I change in 3 weeks I let you know. headers here i come.

Curious if anyone was able to confirm that this is a pre-cat rattle? Been chasing mine for about 3 mos. Want to spend the $$$ on the right fix. On a side note, Anyone got a vid or pics of the process to replace all 3 cats? Thanks in advance.
