Blew My Tranny...

Today the car was driving like it has always driven, until i had to reverse out of a parking lot because it would go into reverse, Then 15 minutes later i arrive at a shell gas station to tank up and i tried to throw it in reverse to adjust my car and it wouldn't drive in reverse. The car drives only in 2nd gear and i cant move my shifter to the left at all only into 5th and reverse (example -l ) that's where i can only throw my sifter, but drive in 2nd gear in the neutral position.
Few months ago the same thing happen to a buddy of mines turbo 4th gen, he told me its the 3rd tranny that has done that to him... So I'm guessing my tranny is blown since the same thing happen to him, or could it be something else?

Check the linkage.

could it be a bent shift fork? There isn't that much info of 5th gens shifter linkage on the org, and since im a noob i wouldn't know what I'm looking at. I dont understand how this could have happened to me, car was driving good and i had no problem with the tranny or shifting gears b4 all this, no weird noise... I'm forced to drive in only 2nd gear and it blows.

I assure you he's not trolling you... it's just the way you phrased it.

Trying to think of a way to say this... Let's just say that this is the scene one might visualize BEFORE you would make such a statement:

But on with content:

I agree with what others say -- check your shift linkage. I think if your transmission was indeed totally ruined, parts would be mangled, shrapnel would be floating around, and you would have a LOT of noise going on while driving in second, which you didn't mention was happening.

Now -- I have never worked on a Maxima 5-speed, but I would imagine all cars are similar in design to some extent. My money says try this first:

Go through the FSM and find out what it takes to access the shifter innards. You'll likely have to remove the center console, and a few layers of boots and such surrounding the shifter.

I betcha you'll be able to fix this if you remove the shifter and realign the slots where the end of the shift lever moves through to slide the different dogs and syncros into pl....

Crap.

I just realized something. The Max is a FWD car. All cars I've worked on that had this issue were RWD, and the shift went right into the transmission.

I would have edited this once I realized my error, but I left it up in case this information can somehow lead into the solution from another angle.

Like others have said, possible shift linkage issue...though it sounds like it could also be a shift fork.

When my transmission failed, it started leaking fluid, then started making a whine that would increase with speed (carrier bearing?) began to be difficult shifting into first and second (synchros) then finally locked in gear....this was after roughly 10K from when i first noticed it leaking fluid from the passenger side axle seal.

Check out my reply in Post 6. It may not solve the problem, but it's a good place to start diagnosing your problem. There are no miracle answers. You'll have to get your hands dirty at some point. Either that or pay someone else to get their hands dirty. You might as well do it yourself to the extent you are able. Break it down in sections. Linkage first. Good luck!

BTW... I believe you'll be fine following the 4th gen 5speed info which is available in that forum. It's basically the same setup.
