P0021 code turns into noisy timing chain

So today after work I got my car scanned at part source, and got the p0300 and p0021 codes. I read in another thread that possibly cleaning the solenoid for the cam sensor can possibly fix this. So I removed it cleaned it and re-installed, but due to my less than good light in my little ghetto garage I didn't notice the gasket wasnt placed properly. Not noticing the misplaced gasket, I started it, ran good, took it for a good drive and pulled over to check it, oil was everywhere and it was leaking at the cam sensor obviously.

I got it home and topped up the oil, it lost almost 3L of oil I'm so pissed that I did this because the now there is a timing chain whine, that u start to here around 2000rpm, it almost sounds like a whistle. F*******ck, what a stupid move, after just getting my y-pipe on, cats gutted and intake on.

I don't know much about the timing chain and sprocket system, but any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated.

So it's definitely not goin away, there's a good tick from it on a cold start that goes away once it's warm and the whine is consistently there all the time. Now I can only hope it's the tensioner and not the chain that needs replacing. Has anyone ever heard of this "whine" before?

I have experienced the "Variable Timing Solenoid" getting plugged up when I allowed my oil level to get to low. I have also had a P0300 code before as a result of the same low oil level.

To clean things up inside (the variable timing solenoid) to be more specific I purchase AutoRX (only available on the website) and it is a bit pricey as internal engine cleaner go, I switch my oil to dino oil and added a bottle for one drive cycle (5,000km) and then drain the oil and changed the filter. Within the first couple of hundred km my variable timing solenoid became freed up and that gentle ticking noise was gone. I now make it a general practice to the AutoRX a least once every 6 months for a drive cycle (I drive 35,000 km a year) ... for me the product was fantastic, I really thought I was going to have to replace my engine, but things have worked out just fine and the car is running very strong.

Do check out the site and make your own decision on giving the product a try.

Right on man I would try cleaning it again, but I actually got rid or both codes doing it. Not to sure how, but both codes are gone, atleast for now. My issue is I believe I damaged either the timing chain or the tensioner from it getting so low on oil, and I mean low, there was only just over 2L in it Now it's whining all the time, it doesn't sound terrible, and the car is performing great but I know it's not right. I just hope it's the tensioner and not the timing chain, I'm gonna order a tensioner and install it as soon as it comes in.

Your P0300 can be caused by the P0021 The Variable Timing Solenoid has a very narrow passage way that your oil travel through, running the oil level very low will allow the sludge from down in the pan to get pushed up into the engine small bits of debris can clog this passage way up which results in screwing up the timing and then produces the P0300 for multiple cylinder miss firing to take place so cleaning the solenoid is key to ensuring the oil flow.

As I stated the auto-rx works while you drive it brakes down the sludge and vanish inside the engine into a liquid which then gets filter out by the oil filter, you may find the whine you have also goes away once proper oil flow has been re-established inside the engine.

Alright, I'm gonna clean both solenoids later with some brake cleaner. But I'm still counting on having to replace that tensioner, I was pretty hard on it when I didn't know the oil was leaking
