I think the published horsepower ratings on BMWs are very conservative. Just like how my Denon 85W/ch receiver is louder and clearer than the JVC 120W/ch receiver I compared it against, the BMW 325i is a lot quicker than other cars with small 170hp 6-cyl engines.

LOL, either the guy cant drive, or thats a funny story.. my 95 auto vs. 328 5 speed, sorry, no way, they get the launch, they keep pulling, they see a twisty, throw the car in and poof.. bye bye..
Well, my friend isn't the best shifter, and I beat him on two consecutive runs, both because he got "a bad launch". But I know he should have crushed me if he knew how to race. I'm not debating that.

Dont know about the manuals, but the autos are easy as hell to launch.. you floor it, torque brake it, no wheel spin what so ever, with traction control off.

Maybe that's the figures they use, if that's what you were getting at.

Would certainly answer a lot of questions...

Everyone who feels the need to brag about how their car is so much better than anyone elses.

This includes, Maxima owners, BMW owners, Civic owners, Probe owners, anyone.

But mostly, it's BMW owners.

Consider they weight 400lb more than the Maxima, that's very good!
Lol, we have a 530 and a 97 max, and there's absolutely no match between the 2, but that was from standstill and from a roll of about 20mph, i don't know about the highway tho.... Still i'd take the BMW in a heartbeat

because they are more affordable?

One thing I don't like about BMW. Their MSRP are reasonably good, in fact, their prices are very competitive in their class. However, you have to add tons of packages in them to have the stuff you want. You cannot just add one option, you have to buy the whole package....Most of their packages are over 2000 bucks.

If you guys want to check out a BMW worth talking about check out this guys 540. That thing will smoke almost anything with 4 doors, including the M5.. I mean not even close.. Go into the site and check out his dyno slips, and his friends rides.. They're all seriously modded.. These cats must have some cash..

The Bimmer are good for luxury, handling, style, performance etc.
I thought about getting one but the lowest one I would accept was the 328. I wanted the 330, may be even the 330xi but the $$ was way over what I can afford.

If one do not race, then they might be happy with a 318, 323, 325 etc. I would not buy one of those cuz I like to drive fast and to pay the big bucks and still get beat will give me HUGE buyer remorse.

If I had more dough, the 330ci, xi, M3 would definitely be something to consider.

Actually that power figure is rated at the crank. Wheel HP is less. The power figures the factory provides are pretty spot on. Also all E36 BMW's weigh 3200lbs or more. The E46 weighs even more. Those are the last two 3series models. The 5 series and up get very heavy. These are solid cars.

The conservative horsepower and EXCELLENT gearing make up for the heavy weight and low hp.

I'd take the M3 if i had the $$$, but different people like different things, just like how i don't give a damn how $hitty the WRX and Alti's interior is, as long as it has da powaaaaaaaaaaaa

A mechanic told me that the secret of BMW's excellent ride/handling is simple. RWD, low spring rates, high damping rates, stiff chassis and big anti roll bar.

Is this any true?

Also, SCC in 4 of their articles claimed that stiff anti roll bars improved ride quality. So I believe that BMW's big anti roll bar combined with low spring rates should give it good comfort with mimimal body roll.
He's simplified it a little too much. My bro's Bimmer has like 10 degrees of positive camber, that thing goes EXACTLY where you point it and does it FAST. The tranny's mounted real low too, to drop center of gravity, plus BMW's suspension geometry is some of the most well-developed ever.
I just went through a HUGE back-and-forth with Jeff92SE about sway bars and handling (sort of). Sway bars make single-wheel bumps more noticeable by spreading the impact to other wheels. Low unsprung weight and soft springs make for a smooth ride. If you're REALLY bored, go here:
Sway Bars

Waaah, who reopened this old can of worms? 330 is nice, anything lower isn't worth the $ you pay.

Re: 328 Guys talking crap about Alti and Max

That dude is not BSing. Aerodynamically speaking, the E46 328i is shaped better, it's weight distribution is far superior and has more torque. That translates into... if they get the launch on you off the line, it's CURTAINS! I've seen it myself a number of times already with the new Altima and once with the 255 Max. The 328 ate them for lunch!
