'00 Max, evap code.. Experiences on fixes.

Dad's '00 is still running mint and until this recent problem, has never really had a CEL appear almost ever, except for when the MAF failed several years ago.

It is an evap code, the exact number escapes me but I believe it is the gross leak code.

I have replaced the evap canister and purge solenoid with another used one that was in good shape, with lower miles.

I also replaced the gas cap with an OEM gas cap from the dealer.

Still the code comes back a few days later.

What are the other things to check? Replacing the canister fixed this code completely on my '02 when I had it.

I would have put my money on the gas cap. Sure that stupid strap isn't in the way of the cap sealing? Rechecked lines where replaced the canister? Perhaps one of the rubber hoses/lines has a crack/leak in it?

Well that to me is the only other option too (cracked or broken lines) but I did not see anything when I was under there replacing the canister. I don't know if there is a way to test these lines somehow. Perhaps blowing some air in them, but I don't know if that is bad for anything or what. This whole evap system is like a black box I'd rather not know about

Will double check the gas cap... Thanks for the reply.

smoke test is your best bet to locate any evap leaks. sometimes a pinhole will cause the CEL to come on

My 01 had a EVAP gross leak code. Picked up a 10 dollar gas cap from the local auto parts store, reset the code and it hasn't been back in a month!
