hey guys need a little help, my maxima is making a grindings noise while turning to the left, wanted to know what are some things to look for? wheel bearing, cv axle. ball joint? thanks

 

I would check the CV axle first then the wheel bearing. The ball joint would not cause the noise.

 

what are sings to look for a bad cv axle, i cheked for torn a boot but there there also it doesnt make the clack clack clack sound its more like a grinding? can the cv axle still cause that noise?

 

A torn boot can sometimes be hard to see, depends on where the tear is. In my limited experience with cv axles, they have made a higher pitched pinging sound, not what I would describe as a clack. Do you know which side of the car the noise is coming from?

 

Is the 'grinding' coming from the the front or rear? IF it's from the rear and you turn left and the sound's from the right rear then I'd have to say right rear hub bearing/assembly, if it does it on right turns, then left rear hub etc.

 

It coming from the front left, you guys think is the wheel bearing?

 

I think it could or might be the wheel bearing BUT personally I can't/won't say definitively as I could IF we were talking rear hub bearing noise when turning. I haven't had issue w/ my front hubs (only the rear) so that's what I have for you.

 

It most def somethin in the front because it can felt thru the steering wheel, tought.it was my steering pump but not making any noise, no leaks fluis is good. Either axle or wheel bearing.

 

Check your wheel bearings on the front. Very simple to do...jack up the car, place hands at 12 and 6, wiggle the tire back and forth and see if there is any play. Not sure what the specs are as to if there should be a slight amount of play or not. Post back your findings on the check and I'm sure someone can help once we know if you have any play in the bearing.

Check CV's by turning steering wheel to extreme right, put car in reverse and do slow circles in an open empty parking lot...if you hear clicking, you have a bad CV. Then turn wheel to extreme left, put car in reverse and do slow circles...if you hear clicking, you have a bad CV. Depending on which direction you are turning when hearing the clicking, it could be either the right CV of left CV. Do these checks and post back. Hope this helps a little.

 

Funny thing my 01 maxima has the same issue on the front drivers side and only when i turn the wheel all the way to the left i hear a grinding sound. I just noticed this a week or so ago while going around a rotary.

 

Tried both methods and no noise and no play in the wheel. What else can it be brake pads? Just had new pads installed bout a month ago and there making noise when coming to a stop. Can one pad be sticking, had the rotors turned also, can it be that the rotors took a crap already? Thanks for the help

 

If its grinding when coming to a stop, I would say pads OR rotors. I'd double check the pads first and make sure they are wearing evenly. If one pad on one wheel is worn than the other one, you most likely have a caliper problem. IIRC, if the rotors were really bad before them being turned, turning them may not have worked and you may have to just buy new ones (this i'm not 100% sure about but I seem to remember hearing that there becomes a point when turning rotors just wont work). Thats about all I got for ya, hopefully someone else will chime in too. But just to clarify, it is grinding when you turn AND when you are breaking??

 

Yeah correct its grinds when i turn and when im breaking, same sounds like when your brake lads are really worn

 

hey guys been a couple of days and the noise hasnt gone away now its noticable while going forward. more noticable while hitting 20 havent taken out the pads to check because brakes arent really my forte the only thing i havent conquered lol

 

I get a noise when I turn my steering wheel from full lock left back to the center. It's a weird noise, not really a grindind. I read that it could be a strut mount. I jacked up my car and there was no play in the wheel so that may be it.

 

i dont think mine would be a strut mount i would imagine what would more like a clunk this is grind like when you have really worn brake pads

 

did you ever figuered out what it was? i had a mechanic cheked it out he said it was bad struts. havent installed my eibachs yet so i guess im just goign to get some tokico blues withc are way cheaper than autozone.

 

hey guys still havent found the fix to my issue but i think i just may have. i was pretty sure it was a bad wheel bearing but but there no play in both front wheel. no clacking noise while turning so cv axles must ok. i was doing some research on youtube keeping in mind of what the mechaninc told me and came across an old guy who was explaining on what a bad strut mount symptom is. so im guessing that what i have. he explained that the bearing moves when the car is turned, and thats about the only time my car makes noise while making a turn. can this be plausable?

 

No wheel end play doesn't always mean that your bearings are good Have you done a visual check in the cv boot and/or axle? Turn it into the extreme left or right to have a good look in the valleys of the boot. Is your steering rack good? Boots good? No leaks?

 

Try moving the rotor sheild away from the rotor--I just did it tonight and it fixed my metallic sound when turing to the left. Never know and an easy fix

 

im goint to try that tommorow did you just use your hand to bend it slight back?

 

no, what I did is turn the wheel all the way to the right and then to the left to get at both wheels. I worked from the front of the car and placed a screwdriver between the inside of the rotor and the sheild. Then I just twisted the screwdriver pushing the shield away from the rotor. Worked like a charm!

 

Nobody mentioned it could be your steering rack. Those boots busted as well? If your dust shield was bent it would grind all the time not just when turning

 

my shield would only make a metallic sound when turning left-->resolved once I bent the sheild.
