Am I losing it?

I bought my Maxima SE new in 2002. It's an automatic and I could swear that the gear position indicator next to the shifter used to light up. Not talking about in the gauge cluster, that one works. I don't see anything in the owners manual, and I have used the search function and only find alot of console and instrument cluster questions. Should the selector next to the shift handle light up? If so, does anyone know how to change the bulbs? Thanks!

There is a small bulb in there, gota remove the center console to change it, Rather easy.

Glad to know I'm not losing my memory. Anyone know how to get the console apart? I can do it, but I'd rather not break anything in the process.

Just get a good look and familiarize yourself with it, and you shouldn't break anything as long as you take your time and don't force nothing out did it a couple time on my car...Good Luck also check youtube might have a Video on it ...

You might be able to get it just removing the shifter trim, its a tight spot but it would save you from taking the entire console off. Just go around the edges with something flat and pop it up.

The trickiest part is getting the plastic trim plate that is around the shift lever off. You start by taking out the ash tray cup and removing the screw that is under there. Then you pry up on the plastic trim starting at the rear. The flat part has 4 snaps, the curved part is hooked under the edge of the heater control trim panel.

Pry up the rear corners, the snaps are on the sides about 3/4 inch from the back edge. Then pry up the the forward 2 snaps, they are also on the sides, maybe an inch forward of the "P" indicator.

Tilt the back end up and pull down and away from the heater controls. Because of the wires on the hazard light switch and the cigarette lighter, it may not slide easy. Unplug the wires and set the piece aside. You are done with the hard part.

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Do I have to get the bulb from the dealer?

I believe it's a 194 type bulb, available @ any auto parts store.

This *would* be a great time to start LEDs in your interior... :-)
