If it involves a buffer they mind as well hand me a box of 10 grit sandpaper and a bag of stones to use on the car

I doubt they'll get that involved with it. Buffing the paint isn't considered routine cleaning/washing of the paint.

Personally i've never been a big fan of car covers outdoors. If it's in a garage to keep the dust off the car, then yeah.

I'd park it in a garage. If you don't have any garage space, then at least park it under an overhang or carport to keep the sun off of it.

just got one of these from my uncle, gonna use it on saturday:

Got the buffing and polishing pad (white and yellow), got me some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, and a bunch of wax. It's gonna be ON Saturday!

And if I've got time, I'll wash the wife's Outback too...

Careful with the white pads. They can cut really fierce.

Does it look like this?

it's wool, yes. Uncle said I should use the white one with the polish, then the yellow one with the wax...is that right?

Those wool pads are only used to remove oxidation and scratches. You don't wax with them. Foam pads are for waxing and polishing.

Step one, wool pad to deox. I don't recommend the white pad. They're very aggressive and should only be used for paint in really bad shape.
Step two, foam pad to polish out the paint after the wool pad, since the wool pad will leave fine swirls behind.
Step three, wax with an orbital. The look like hand held palm sanders.

the yellow pad is super soft, should I do the buffing with that one instead? I plan on doing the actual waxing by hand

Use the yellow pad with the ultimate compound.

Before you do that, claybar the car first.

I would recommend using an orbital to apply the wax. It applies it evenly and gets it done quickly. You can buy one at Walmart for $25ish.
