Power steering pump

2002 Maxima SE. 150,000km. VERY nasty noise starting up and while driving the other morning. Dealer says need to replace power steering pump and lines, and steering rack. VERY expensive. Does it make sense that ALL of that would need replacing?

I'll add to my prior post; I missed the part about the rack. I would ask them to explain which part has failed and then subsequently why the whole system needs to be replaced. It is unlikely both the rack and pump failed at the same time. Maybe if the rack failed and you lost fluid, forcing the pump to run low and/or dry?

Regardless, I still stand by replacing both hoses whether the issue is the rack or the pump, as they are already in there doing the work.

I'm actually surprised they are not talking about replacing the rack bushings and tie rod ends! I doubt those come with a new rack.

Bottom line, I believe it is possible, but not likely, both the pump and rack need replacement. However, the best feedback anyone can give you since we cannot diagnose your car is to go and obtain a second opinion. Let us know what the second guy says.

Also, it may be cheaper to buy your own oem parts for the job. Try www.nissanpartsasap.com

Best probably to just call them after you know what parts you need.
