Noob here looking for help on finding CAI

Hey guys,

Im a newbie on these forums, I just registered. About a few days ago I purchased a 2000 Nissan Maxima. Im assuming its the fifth generation. Im new to performance parts and modifications so I am still browsing around the forums to learn more.

I am interested in buying a Cold Air Intake. A few of my friends have it and they love it. Problem is I am having trouble finding one for the 5th generation. I am willing to spend $100 max. I have been searching ebay, amazon and smaller performance parts websites. I don't see much for the 2000 model. Although I see plenty for the 4th and 6th generation.

I have used to search feature on the forum, but still can't find the right help. Will a CAI made for the 4th generation fit on my 2000 Maxima? I see decent ones on ebay going around for $40-70.

For example you can see on this page: Ebay Link

If it won't fit, can anyone recommend a site or specific intake I can purchase for under $100? I am not looking for the best one, just something that will get the job done. Thank you and I appreciate any help.

If you're looking to do it under a hundred bucks, piece one together yourself.

First ask yourself exactly what are you hoping to gain by adding a "cold air intake"? Then use the search function on the forums to find out if an intake is going to do what you think it is going to do.

I'll just simply say this, without any other modifications done, the only truly significant difference with an intake will be sound.

Save your money on the intake and get a Y-pipe. Probably one of the easiest/cheapest mods that actually adds horsepower.

That intake you are looking at from eBay might not work. You'll have to find one that is a 00-01. 02-03 won't even work because the engine bay are different.

I think you should make it a short ram. It's cheaper, easier to install, and you won't risk hydro-locking your car in case you drive through a puddle.

Here is my set up right now.

Check out this thread, it really goes into detail about CAI and SRI.

Thanks for your input guys. The extra horse power gain isn't a big concern. The CAI just sounds freakin sweet! I love how it sounds, it gives it that vacuum thrust sound when you rev it hard lol. This will be my first mod so I just want to start off nice, cheap, and easy. Then I will consider the y pipe, exhaust and others. So can anyone recommend a CAI on the internet for under $100?

That's an interesting setup. Never seen anyone install a cone filter inside the factory airbox.

An actual CAI in your car would require fabrication to tunnel the intake into the fender, and a relocation for your battery. That's a whole lot of work, and entirely unnecessary since all you want is that intake sound, like you said. Plus, there is a fair amount of anecdotal evidence that a good SRI actually works better than a CAI in the 5th gen. (There's also a lot of hearsay that by "works" I mean it's just loud, but people love to argue that point.)

Cobble together a SRI using your OEM resonator, some couplers, adapter plates and a quality pop-charger. Don't look to the internet to buy one, just do your own research here on the Org.

And by research, I mean take the time to read and search. Plenty of spoon feeding already here for your very first post.

I was thinking the same thing. Never seen that before. Very clever. Although I imagine it's neither better nor worse than the GAB.

In fact, now that I say that... OP, just GAB your car and be done with it. Won't cost you a dime, and you'll get that intake howl you're looking for.

Thanks, I got the pipe from LI_Max_WOT and cut my airbox to fit it as a heat shield. I spent around $160 for everything.

IDK why I like that, but I kinda do. It's really creative.

That filter is a cylinder instead of the traditional cone, isn't it?

Shielding it doesnt cool down the air though.....it still pulls air from a hot engine bay. Creative yes, functional no.

Yeah, that's true. It also looks cool too. I had put the filter cover on top of it to make it look completely stock but it was flapping around when I was driving it do I just got rid of it. At least the air scoop still works on it. Part number is RX-4140 on the K&N filter, incase anyone wants to know.

That's true as you're sitting there at the light with the car at idle. Move forward a bit and problem solved.

Besides, the OP doesn't care about marginal performance gains. He already said so. He wants that howl.

So... GAB. /done

Not without negative pressure it doesn't. It's not a "scoop", it's just an inlet.
