Issue when starting car...

Hey everyone,

I have an 01 maxima se auto with 139k. I've done a few searches regarding my issue yet haven't come up with anything that is directly correlated. My issue is that at random times when I go to start my car it either takes more cranks or sometimes it will have a weak start. By weak start I mean I will turn the key as usual then instead of it starting whereas the rpms go up to about 1500 then come down to idle, it will hesitate/stutter for a few seconds below 500 rpms then go up to idle.. I have tried to get a video but of course the times that I try it doesn't do it.. Anyone ever have this before or know what the culprit may be? Any input is appreciated!

Thanks.

Is your SES light on? if it is you need to get the codes pulled at your local parts store for free, and report back here.

EDIT: I had a similar problem with weak starts but it didn't always happen. In my case it would slowly crank and rpms would go to normal after it started, but it would ALWAYS start. I couldn't pinpoint the problem so I just left it alone until I knew for sure. My car was doing this for 1.5 years and I did not know what it was. 3 weeks ago found out it was a dying starter, because it died while my mom was driving my car. Called up AAA and the guy had a tool large enough to beat the living crap out of the starter to get the car to start so I could get the car home so I could fix it and not have to get a tow 80 miles(even though it would have been free). Since I have changed the starter she starts up like new now.

I know I could have saved you the story but I wanted to share so maybe you should have your starter tested. Not tested on the car cause its not accurate at all, got it tested the morning it died on my mom(later that afternoon) and the guy from advance said my starter was fine too.

It is. I got it scanned and it was something regarding the fuel level sensor. I forgot the exact code but I can get it again.

Intermittent just like your random weak starts. Could be a coincidence but I'd start there. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/ That is a link to the FSM that can help you to confirm you need to replace your fuel level sensor. A haynes or chilton is a more dumb down version that is very helpful as well. If your not good with cars let a mechanic take care of it for you, you are dealing with fuel here.

Thanks for the info! I am going to bring it to Nissan within the next couple weeks to get the issue resolved. I will post an update as soon as I find out. Thanks again!
