2002 fuel filter replacement
2002 fuel filter replacement
I purchased my 02 maxima in April of 2012 with 110k miles. Immediately after purchasing I bought various items to do a tune up including the fuel filter. I had a close friend of might replaced various parts but he never got to the fuel filter. About 4k miles later I came on this site searched for a guide to see if it was something I could tackle myself.
I would say anyone who is on the fence about replacing their fuel filter should go ahead and do it. I have no automobile experience and it only took me about 1 hour and 15 min. I followed the tut provided by this forum and took all necessary precautions.
I attempted this after letting my car sit over a saturday night. I would recommend doing this replacement with 1/4 of a tank. After I pulled my 15a fuse, i cranked the car a few times and then opened the gas cap, waited a few min then removed the hose. Not one drop of gas came out the hose. After replacing the filter the whole assembly fits together like a puzzle, the fuel pump goes in a certain way and a long plastic piece attached to the filter must go into a designated groove. When putting everything back together if the tabs don't close take your time and trace back.
My apologies for the long story, I am extremely proud that I was able to replace the filter on my own and wanted to share my story and a few pointers that might be helpful for the next individual. A big thank you to forum member Orgullo. Your write up with pics was perfect.

I replaced mine at about 245k. I was hoping that a clogged fuel filter was the cause of the light load pinging issue that I have been battling, but the car runs as it did prior to changing out the filter.
Did you open yours up? You'll pretty much have to break the darn thing to get to the paper filter inside the plastic canister... but while mine had a dark color, it wasn't packed full of **** like I thought it would.

I did mine about 30k miles ago. I can't say if I noticed a performance increase at all due to placebo effect, but my Maxima over the last 30k miles has always run excellent and returned 21-22mpg in city driving. I'd say replacing this filter every 60k miles is worth the small amount of money and minimal time and effort if only to keep the car running at it's peak.
If doing this your first time be patient and thorough...you don't want to break any of the plastic pieces because you'll have to replace them. There is no repairing the plastic stuff with fuel around it.
I know...because I broke a piece of the housing assembly and had to buy a new one the last time I replaced the fuel filter.
