Brake Light On
Brake Light On
Hello, the "Brake" light on my 2001 Nissan Maxima is staying on. It used to only come on when it was cold out and it would turn off when it was warm, but now it stays on all of the time. I need to replace the relay for my left turn signal, but I don't think that's related. I thought it was related to my bad O2 sensors, but I replaced all 4 and the issue has not gone away. My brakes are fine, only 20,000 miles on them and I'm not hard on them. I have reset my ECU multiple times due to other work on my car and it still stays on. Can anyone help?
On my old Accord (and Maximas of a few members here) the brake light switch was the issue.
My battery drained a couple of times, due to the brake lights staying on, even when I was out of the car and the doors were locked. If you search for "brake control switch" you'll see some threads regarding how to deal with it. If that IS the case, it's an easy and inexpensive fix.
Edit - My post is about the brake lights and the third brake light staying on. Not about the "Brake" light on the dashboard being on. Just to clarify.

If it has been a long time since your last brake job, it's probably because the fluid level is low. That will happen as the brake pads wear out. But check your brake pads for wear before you fill the master cylinder all the way up, because putting in new pads will raise the level.
