That sounds about right, the filters for our cars are small. 4.7 liters is too much, read a manual to find out the exact number.. Google search and your answer, it will be there.

Fram PH7317 is for the Nissan. But I don't like Fram. They are very cheaply made, using cardboard in place of the rubber seals used by others.
Engine takes 3 7/8 quarts of oil without filter change and 4 1/4 with a new filter.

as said, Fram sucks. i would go with a Mobil 1 filter or OEM Nissan filter. you can get OEM filters on Ebay bulk for cheap
last time i did a oil change on a 5th gen it took 4.5l, but god are those dipsticks hard to read. the oil smudges allover the dipstick

I was actually going to ask about this. These filters do seem ridiculously small for our car. My wife's Mazda Protege5 also uses a super-tiny filter stock, but I discovered that an Integra GSR filter was double the size but used the same threads and had the same diameter rubber gasket, so I have used that ever since. Is there a larger filter that we could use? In my old Ford diesel, I run a Powerstroke filter and it allows me an entire quart of extra capacity over the stock IDI filter.
I bought a box of K&N's for my Maxima and took them in to the shop that changed my oil. And yes, I'd always duck my head under to see that it actually got onto the car instead of some "Joes All Purpose Filter".
Well I'll be damned. It looks like the 3.0 gets a bigger filter than the 3.5 (Maxima).
From Mobil website for 5.5 gen Maxima:
Mobil 1 Model M1108
Champion Model PH2876
Fram Model PH7317
Fram Model TG7317
Fram Model XG7317
For 5th gen Maxima:
Mobil 1 Model M1110
Champion Model PH2867
Fram Model PH7317
Fram Model TG7317
Fram Model XG7317
Here is one thread about the Mobil 110:

7317 is the right one from Fram.
Last time I was in Autozone they had the 5 qt. plus a filter deal going on and the filter was K&N. What surprised me is the K&N is actually a little shorter than a Fram or other comparable filter...
so if you go that route don't let it freak you out. I actually called back up there and asked them to double check the part # for me.

Filter body size is all relative. A smaller filter body with a better filter medium accomplishes the same thing. Even the smallest of oil filters can go for 5k miles so a bigger oil filter really doesnt matter all that much. If you really want to do something for your engine then add an aux oil cooler and add to the capacity that way not by a slightly bigger oil filter, come on
