About the only thing worse than the current FRAM filters is no filter! Please use search, this subject has been discussed many many many times. At one time FRAM made excellent oil filters and had an excellent product. Today they are resting on their laurels, putting out inferior products and charging for top quality ones. Another company wrecked by the accountants!
Be well!!!

PS. My personal opinion of oil filters. 1. AMSOIL/BALDWIN; 2.Mobile 1 with Synthetic Media; 3. Hastings; 4. NISSAN OEM; 5. Purolator.

Fram makes OK oil filters. There are better oil filters on the market. If I was going to use extended drain intervals I would use one of the filters karguy mentioned.

I have used Fram oil filters on my max for 100,000 miles. After a dyno, compression check, and an oil analysis all within the last 2,000 miles, my motor is in great shape. Now that my max is finally broken in I have switched to amsoil and their filter. My max has been running the amsoil for 4,000 miles with no leaks or oil burn off. My parents have a 1988 plymouth horizon with 250,000 miles and all it's ever had is fram oil filters.

IMO as long as you keep the drain intervals around 3k miles (dino oil) I don't think it matters if you use a fram or purolater oil filter. The quality of the oil itself is much more important.

Don't be fooled by Fram's 20 different filters, they are all the same inside. I would use anything but Fram.

OK I have found a resch of the oil filters fro mthe ntpog. Thanks guys. I used fram since Ive had my car. I just switched to Fram Tough guard which I see is an improvement dealing with the sgin of the filter element to better filter the oil. I think my Next oil filter I will try is the Purolator Premium plus. I was reading and the Pure one has better filtration but the holes arent bigger to better filter the oil out Quicker. So I will try that and see. I see so far I am gradually increasing in Quality of oil filters . What sucks is knowing that the regular fram filter only have 193 sqin of element where as the others mostly are near the 300s or in the 300s( Fram Tough gaurd) and range all the way up to 400s in element Sqin to better filter the oil.

Best VQ oil filter FOR THE MONEY:

STP S6941 $7.00

Advantages:

- Easy to find (AutoZone)
- Top Bypass Valve (Unique bypass valve integrated into the outlet. When pressure is high enough, the oil forces the valve open and should travel right from the inlet, through the valve, and out the outlet (very short path compared to standard bypass valve location at bottom of filters)
- Quality Construction (made on same assembly line as Mobil 1 & Bosch)
- "Oversized" application (larger filtration area)

Another good one:

Motorcraft FL-821 $2.99 (Yes, you read that right)

Same advantages as above, although the quality of construction is probably a slight notch below the STP filter.

Problem with this one is I have yet to see one in person. It would get best "bang for the buck" nod if I knew it was consistently kept in stock at part stores.

I recommend these over all others, including Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Nissan OEM.

There is another STP one, the S2849A which is $2.99, but it wasn't in stock, so I can't be sure if it has a top bypass valve, etc.

A list of recommended and available VQ/VG/VE filters is on its way.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people have read this already but it is worth bringing it up again... Read the warnings. It should at least give you an idea of what's out there.

Oil Filter Study

Yes, and for those of you who follow the SHO oil filter study site, there was a recent update to their info. The K&N filters took a hit.

That's sort of a shame about the K&N........I was looking into oversized possibilities for the VQ.

There are a few AC Delco filters left in stores, but they are getting harder and harder to come by.....
