A/C Compressor
I have a 2000 maxima GLE with 305,000 miles on it, I been having this whining noise for awhile. I finally had my mechanic look at it to see what the problem was, He said the A/C compressor is shot. Im surprise cause I really dont use my A/C that much. anyway I just wondering should i get a use one snce my car have very high miles on it, on should I by a brand new one. the brand new ones run around 300 bucks for a used one at the junkyard I can get it for 80 bucks.

If the whining noise is there without the compressor engaged the clutch bearing could be shot. When the compressor is engaged as when the A/C is on this bearing is just along for the ride and not spinning. See if this whining noise goes away when the A/C is on. Might be tricky to do this in cooler weather but might come on in defrost mode.

The compressor still making the whining noise when the ac is on too

That is strange! I would be looking elsewhere for the source if the noise is the same whether the compressor is on or off. Very hard to trace noises when belt driven. Even belt noise can cause this or an idler. I changed a compressor once when all that was wrong was the wrong style of belt. And I am and A/C mechanic who use to work on these systems frequently.
