Car Won't Start

Hello,

So i have a 2000 Nissan Maxima gle and recently I was driving it and I was having trouble accelerating, I would press on the gas and it would take a moment before accelerating and a few times wouldnt go past 45mph. The next day I had trouble getting it to start up, when it did It ran fine and then stalled on me at a red light. Yesterday I drove to a friends house with no issues then when I got ready to leave gave me the same issues when trying to start it, finally it started but stalled on me before I left the parking lot, It does start for a few seconds then sputters and dies again, I ended up pushing it to a parking spot and had to leave it there. I recently changed a bad ignition coil, and changed my MAF sensor a few years back, I dont know how long they last but I would imagine that it is something aside from those two parts. I have searched the forums and Haven't been able to find someone with symptoms quite like mine. Please any help would be appreciated.

when you changed your MAF did you go with genuine OEM parts? Your symptoms are describing a MAF issue...

No I believe it was replaced with an aftermarket sensor.

go OEM or go home with certain things...MAF being one of them. Go to a junkyard and find one there, maybe in the classifieds here as well...

No codes? Without codes it's a guessing game, maybe this, maybe that...

So i had a mobile mechanic come out and read the codes, and an MAF code is coming up and primary ignition coil code is also coming up. He explained that I should have all of my ignition coils replaced along with my spark plugs, and possible my fuel filter, but I'd like to get maxima forums members opinions. Additionally I was able to get the maxima to start up again however I noticed black smoke coming out of my muffler when I tried accelerate so ultimately its parked again and Ill just have to have it towed. That guy may not have know what he was talking about, or perhaps my car isn't spitting out the code that will let me know what the real issue is. My question now is, is it normal for maximas to emit black smoke when its an issue with the ignition coils? Please let me know what you all think the underlying issue might be.

If the MAF code is popping, replace the MAF. OEM, remember?

Ignition coils...it's a 2000 so the coils ARE suspect...but no need to get all 6 right now. You can wait until you get a better idea of which one is misfireing and replace that one. Go OEM on the coils too by the way. It's well known that aftermarket coils will throw a random misfire code.

you can always try "seafoam" and clean the system that will also help getting rid of that black smoke

OP needs to do other things, like get the car running without popping codes, before using seafoam.

Totally agree, get the codes taken care of before doing anything else, and use OEM parts for MAF and coil packs. I'd also tackle the MAF first and wait on the coils, or buy one front and one back coil and swap em around till misfire goes away (most likely you just have one bad coil if this problem just started suddenly, they don't all go bad the same day). Also, buy a $25 code reader so you can check/clear codes yourself, and keep it in the glove box so you'll be ready whenever something happens.

Install an OEM MAFS. Common issue. Common also to have an aftermarket one be complete garbage even brand new.

The fuel filter is non-replacable on this car. It's actually just a filter 'sock' on the pump inlet inside the tank. It can be replaced but the chances of it being the issue are like 1%. Don't bother.
