Automagic 2nd gear start?

I noticed the other day that my car will not start out in 2nd gear. I guess there's no real reason to do it, other than maybe in the snow/ice, but what's the deal? I put the selector in "2", with and without the O/D off, and it still pulls away from a dead stop in 1st gear. Weird. Every auto I've ever owned will let you start in 2nd if you want.

Hmm I never actually tried doing that. That's kind of weird that it won't let you actually start in 2nd. Maybe it has to do with the gearing, not sure though.

OT: Do you have any pics of your PIAA Yellow H3's? How much did they cost?

The Accord V6's AT starts out in 2nd if you put the shifter in 2nd. But the Camry's AT (97-01, not sure of the new ones) starts out in 1st still so the Maxima is not alone.

yes, 2nd gear start mode is very handy for snowy/icy conditions

Don't know if he has pics, but I do ...

Check out my homepage

and you can see them on the lighting page. On the ground they are very yellow, but looking at them straight on, they aren't ...

No there is no way to start in second with auto. 2 is low range gearing offing 2 gears, 1 is just a low range gear with only 1 low gear. So 1 and 2 are ment for lose conditions(snow)

whats the point starting in 2nd anyways? if you just start off at first slowly, you won't spin and even if you can get 2nd gear start you can make the tires spin even my dad's torqueless odyssey V6, I can spin the tires in 2nd gear in snow with the peddal down 1/4 of the way.

to be honest, most auto's DON'T let you start out in 2nd just cuz you put it there. Even on my friends 98 328 auto you had to put it in Manual mode to get it to start in 2nd. Most cars autos will will top out in the gear selected.

I got them for $18.50 ea. at http://www.optauto.com

I don't have any pictures, but they are pretty cool looking to oncoming traffic. At a distance they're kind of light green with a hint of yellow and white. The closer you get, depending on the angle, they can change from white to purple to blue...especially during the day. They're pretty decent in the fog, but I'm a firm believer that no fog light really does that good in the fog.

Well, with traction control, I have to agree with you. But usually I've found it easier to get going in 2nd because you don't have to feather the gas as much to keep the wheels from spinning.

Actually I mis-read what you said. I thought you said it would start in 2nd gear. All Autos except the Q45 back in the day starts in 1st gear..
