Your observations above shows that the sound changes according to which gear you are in. In other words, it's the tranny.
Why go to the dealership? Did they do something and guarrantee their work? If not, any work they do will cost you an arm, leg and your 1st born child.
Goto car-part.com, find a used tranny from a reliable source, the have an independent shop install it. Done.

I will probably only have the dealership look at it if the problem is not fixed by the time my car will go in for the recent airbag recall, which I assume it will.
If it does turn out to be the trans, I will be changing it myself anyway.

Update on the car. Finally got it fixed. I believe it was the axle nut on the driver's side. I had purchased a driver's side axle and when I went to put it on I noticed the axle nut, though not loose and spinning freely, wasnt as tight as it should have been. Tightened it down and completely fixed. Never expected that to be the problem, but it's been 3 days and havent heard it once.

My friend had a slight problem while turning sort of clicking. Axles looked good so I figured it was internally bad. Turn out his driver side axle nut was also loose. It was OEM with 160k never touched, weird but true..now I know anytime u think u have an axle problem and the boots are fine, tighten them down first.

And you're right, DJ, I never thought something THIS simple could have caused the racket it did. So always start with the simple (and free) stuff!
