Maintenance at 168k?

Hi, I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima SE auto with 168,000+ Miles. I want to do a complete service and check up(don't have past maintenance records). I'm looking to do it as soon as possible.

1- What specific parts do I need buy/replace, to do a Complete Tune Up and preventive maintenance? If possible, a complete list.

Thank you.

That was a super broad question since you have no history.

Spark plugs, RVC with 6th gen, gasket. Ooi change.Thats the most obvious tune up. Now how far do you want to go? Brake fluid, coolant, brakes, and check for common oil leaks. Keep an eye out if you burn oil. 6sp or auto? Clean maf and tb perhaps. List is long. Start with my first two sentences and see how it goes.

Oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, pcv valve, clean MAF, new transmission and brake fluids, etc.

I would also check your hoses for dry rot and flush the radiator while your at it!

Maintenance has been covered here plenty of times. It's also covered in the FSM, in the MA section.

I checked it out. Is it recommended to change the Auto Transmission oil? It doesn't say to change it on the manual...

Thank you.

I wouldn't change it at 168, especially if you do not know when it was last changed. How does it look, the ATF?

Ill have to check. I asked around and most people say it's not good to change the ATF, and it tends to be worst for the transmission. Is it recommended at all to change the ATF?

If you had the car young and have done it regularly it's ok.

I bought my car at 39k in 2004 and do it every 10-15k. At 133k now, and need to do it soon. Semi soon.

What is FSM? Does the transmission have a filter to change?

Factory service manual.
Don't touch the filter. Not needed.

If the trans fluid has not been touched in a long while you will want to drop the pan and look at the filter. The new pan gasket usually comes with a filter so just change it out and make sure you take note if there is any metal debris which indicates a problem.

Why not change the fluid on high mileage?
I bought mine in 2006 and I've never changed the atf.

Never changed the air filter too until recently
That's another topic but there was a ton of sand and dirt caked on it. lol

Might cause the tranny to fail, detergents, etc will be removed and those were basically what were keeping it alive.

And there's not even a filter, it's a screen and a magnet. Drop the pan and see how they look.

Yeah I just experience that last week. Trans fluid was still pretty red and only had slight problems. I did a drain and fill but now I got slightly worse shifting problems. Soon it'll be time to send the valve body out for repairs.
