You shouldn't have to. But if you do (providing you don't have the VLSD), you could use a drift from the passenger side and drive it out.
I have an automatic trans and I had to pry it out. When I tried to just press smoothly to pry it out, I couldn't. But when I used a sharp jerking/pounding motion, it popped right out. I was prying between the differential case and the first joint in the axle.

DON'T PRY!!!! Ohhh my... your old axle is already messed up so take the axle in your hand and grab the middle and push then pull EXTREMELY hard... you should be able to pop it out its a pain in the **** though. Its okay if the joint pops out as long as it doesn't fall apart you'd still get the core return on it. So remember push the joint in then pull HARD and if it doesn't come out the first time try it again and again it WILL come out.

There is no pin that you have to push or anything the locking ring is on the axle and can get uber locked in especially if its the oem one. I did mine at 195000km's and the bastard was like it was glued in there and it was oem.
