Blown Tranny

Just got my 2001 SE back from the dealer. It only has 9k miles...problems with slippage so they actually said they needed to replace the whole unit. Found out they put in a remanufactured unit. Drove the thing home today put on 10 miles.. now slipping so bad can't even make it up the driveway. Feels like I have a 5spd again and my foot is half way on the clutch. WHAT the *#@*! My dealer told me that they don't even make brand new units and that all of them are remanufactured units. Does anyone know if this is true? Please let me know. This is such f*&^@# bull!! Does anyone know anything about lemon laws. Maybe I can trade the damn thing in for a 2k2.

That's BS. They have 3 tries to make your car right and then I think you can impose the Lemon Law on them.

You bought a brand new car. The tranny should be replace with a brand new unit. Plain and simple. Tell them to take it off an existing 2000-2001 auto max if they have to.

I think by law under warranty you get new parts. Not remanufactured units. The dealer gave you a line of ****.

Make sure, READ your warranty info. I would think that if you invest that much money in a new car it "should" say that you get new parts but, I would double check.

BTW, did you know that if you buy a brand new DELL computer and something blows, they can replace it with a refurbished item... Even if you spent 3k on a laptop???
I found out the HARD way. Now I read those damn warranty cards!

This is true my troubled friend. The actual parts inside a remanufactured tranny are new but the core (outer casing is the same and therefore cannot be classified as new. There are only as many Maxima cores as there are Maxima's. I only know this because when I ordered a tranny for my altima from the dealer I had to send in my old one in exchange. If this is not completely clear let me know

Your most likely correct. I just don't like being jerked around. It really steams me. So instead of me getting mad, a lawyer is my solution. But Again I think your response was better than mine.

I totally understand now. I actually called another dealer and asked them for a part# for a replacement tranny and they said they only had remanufactured ones also. So I guess my dealer wasn't FOS. But that still doesn't explain the fact that my "new" tranny is still SLIPPING 1000 times worse now. Wait til tomorrow when I get a hold of my service rep....Now I'll have no car again for 3 days. Anyone know if the dealer should supply some kind of loaner ?? Wishful thinking I'm sure! I know Infiniti does, but I guess that's what you get when you buy an overpriced Maxima!!

that, and a longer warranty, and snacks and sandwiches when you visit, and a sweeter interior, and you can tell ppl you have an infiniti, and a grille that looks like a Buick

wtf ??! feeling for you bro. You have the right to demand that the new tranny to be installed. Your local office of Atty General has all the rights you need on lemon. Hell, it is lemon. Pursue getting a whole car replacement, and dont take it any other way. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

I know, just pitch a tent in front of the dealer with a large sign saying "Loaners not provided for owners of Lemon cars".

They will give you a loaner.

It's the way of doing things in this business. I've got twice that problem in the past. First with an Accura, then with a Jeep Cherokee. Each time they did the same thing, installed a remanufactured one.

Dealers are usually not authorize to play inside a tranny, they just install it. What they do is that they order one, then when it arrives they remove the faulty tranny, install the 'new' one and reship the faulty one to a warehouse. From there, the faulty tranny is sent to a specialized unit of the manufacturer (or a sub-contractor), where it is completely disambled, cleaned and rebuilt with a mix of new and old parts. The remanufactured tranny is then reintroduced in the inventory for a new 'customer'.

So your chance of getting a real NEW tranny should be around 0%.

Good luck.

P.S. And BTW, getting a lawyer for that will only cost you money. Keep it for anything else.
