Changing trans fluid

Hi.
This thing has never had the oil changed at 190k.
It's still red. Tranny shifts great.
In the early cold AM the shift point to 2nd is alittle higher then normal,
but very solid. No real troubles.

My question is I've read the horror stories about changing the oil on a slipping trans
then it'll take a dump acouple months down the road. Or a "good" trans.

How many of you guys changed it at around this mileage and still running good?
Is there a special oil I need to use? I know there's hondas that need a special honda oil to run good.

Is getting it ran through a flush machine a bad idea? Synthetics?
I never had an automatic I had to take care of or a nissan so any advice or
opinions are welcomed.

Since your trans fluid has never been changed with 190K miles your trans has already been damaged from the dirty oil and is going to break down. The dirt is acting as a seal so once you clean it out there is a good chance its going to start slipping. Its pretty much a crap shoot at this point.

Its possible to change it and not encounter any trouble.
Problem with lot of fluid swaps is they also do a chemical cleanse. Which destroys seals and moves metal particles around.
That tranny is already done its job just let it be....I guarantee she will run strong another 35k no problem.

Cool. Thanks.
I'm not worried about the leaky seals since changing them is
no problem. I'm just worried about the clutches slipping or whatever the damage
that is caused that makes them take a dump.

Changing seals isn't any easier than changing a clutch.

How is the fluid still red after so many miles? Nissan transmissions are known for being rough on fluid.

^Thanks for bringing that up! My father takes it down south every 2-3 years
so he doesn't have to fill up his explorer every so hours. Just got off the phone and he does it every time he goes.
So kinda a waste of thread. sorry.

I've never changed it btw.
Only thing I changed under the hood was spark plugs, coils, intake & valve cover gaskets, filter, maf, and cooling fans.

ive changed auto trans fluid on many of my vehicles that didnt have it done in many years with no problem. all i do is dump the trans pan, let it drain, change the filter, button it all up then fill it with some new fluid. if the trans fluid is dirty enough i dump the pan again in 1-2 months and again put some new fluid in it

There's a lot of people in the fluids/lubricants forums that did a complete drain and fill even with high miles and everything held up fine. I did that to mine this last summer, where you disconnect the return line from the transmission cooler to the transmission and drain out the system two quarts at a time. No problems on my I30, although I was only at 50k when I did it. Hoped it would fix my odd shifting but it turns out the shift solenoids are likely to be the true culprit.

not gonna see any treasure in there besides some small shavings. every vehicle ive dumped the pan on has had SOME small metal shavings on the magnet, thats normal. large metal chunks or huge ***** of shavings mean youre up **** creek

auto transmissions, assuming no manufacturing failures, should be able to go 500,000km+ with no problems. going reverse to drive or drive to reverse without fully stopping is what kills 90% of auto transmissions and makes them fail early. too many people dont stop before shifting. and yes, filter should be changed while youre already dumping the pan. something that shouldnt be skipped

i did on my 3rd gen at around 410,000km. trans was acting weird, did a complete drain including draining the torque converter. didnt change the filter because IIRC i couldnt find one. put Royal Purple ATF in, trans went to 429,000km before 1st started to slip sometimes. after i changed the fluid, the clunking into gear, slow shifts, etc quit. i honestly think the trans could have went to 500,000km but around 400,000km the fluid level ran a bit low and i think that toasted some internals

i lent my 3rd gen to a Datsun club and they did tests on the car and after putting Royal Purple ATF in it, it was indeed shifting better. i think everyone was eager to test it because thats when RP ATF came out and i was a guinea pig lol

I remember driving my moms 98 Maxima in highschool.
Manually shifting all the time. I completly toasted that trans.
It gave it a super high stall, free reved to like 3,000rpm so every stop light it was a drag race
burn out. lol

Would that be shift solenoid that it burned out?
Thanks for bring up the fluids and lubrication section. I'm going to be hanging out in there for a alittle while.

I've changed and flushed my transnission fluid via the dealerships since new every 30,000 miles...I'm just over 150,000 miles.

I'll add one more voice. Did HD2 kit and Amsoil synthetic ATF refill and the thing has zero issues. Done at somewhere between 160k and 170k miles. Currently at 182k miles.
