New engine; reprogram

New engine; reprogram
Just replaced the engine on my 03' maxima. My mechanic states that I need to take the car to the stealership to get it reprogrammed/re flashed due to the above normal idle and mpg's down to 13 mpg. Has anyone else had this issue & know of any place besides the dealership that provide this service? Thanks

If it is just your idle that is high you can do the relearn procedure. Look it up there are a few threads about it.
If you idle is too high and the relearn doesn't keep there are a few improvised ways. I recently did the idle relearn and had to unplug 2 fuel injectors to bring it down. After that it kept

If all the wiring is the same, ECU is the same, and ignition switch is the same then there's really nothing that needs reprogramming. Relearning on the other hand, yes.
Get a copy of the FSM and perform all 3 essential relearn procedures laid out. If I remember correctly, it's on page EC-38 or thereabouts. You're looking for Idle Air Relearn, Accelerator Pedal Position Relearn, and Throttle Valve Closed Relearn. I'm guessing that there are some mixed and matched components that need to be relearned by the ECU. Performing those relearn procedures is a quick, simple, and free way to try to straighten things out.

Relearn
Hook to OBD II Scanner: check specific error code
:MAF sensor ( clean it with CRC MAF sensor cleaner and make sure its dry before you install)
:Throttle relearn procedure
Try the relearn procedure: read the below the instruction

[QUOTE="svillegas2253;8951352"]Around how high is the cost of swapping a new motor in these cars? Mine has a little under 130k but always wondered for future reference[/QUOTE
Cost me 1k for the engine(83k miles on it) and 800 to put it in.

swapping motor doesn't need a relearn unless your throttle body was replace as well, which does require a relearn since throttle body is a one piece unit with the TPS, Idle Air control valve and throttle body, which is sucks that is driven by the wire throttle, unlike mine is a 5th gen 3.0 is driven by throttle cable with individual component pieces of TPS, idle air control and throttle body to make up as a throttle body unit.

I have an 03 Infinity that I just put an 02 Maxima engine in it. The 02 engine was complete and all I did was swap engines and plug everything up. When I finished, I hit the starter and it started just like I had just cut it off. I was amazed how quickly it started, how smooth it was and how responsive it was. If there was any learning curve that it went through, it must have been instantly.
What made it even more amazing is the car had sat for at least a year with a blown head gasket and was locked up. Maybe I was just lucky.
