Did my tranny just die?

I was driving my car to pick up a new axle seal and on my way back I went for 5th and it felt spongy but it still went into gear. Now neutral position is right about where 4th gear used to be. So the shifter and the gears are positioned much farther back than they were. It started to leak last week after I replaced the axle, so it's not like it could have leaked all the oil out. I did the short throw shifter mod with poly bushings a couple weeks ago but everything still looks like it's hooked up. Could it be the shifter cable or something? I'm really hoping it's not the tranny!

I figured out this was a clip that fell off of the cable that was holding it to a bracket. Thank god it was something simple!
