2000 Maxima, does what the title says. Took it to a mechanic. He says it's the starter motor. It can throw the timing off. I've never heard of such a thing. Any thoughts?

Did you check your camshaft's?

has the transmission been removed for any reason? if so, the mating surfaces of the engine and trans should have been sanded down, and if not can cause this issue

also check the ground cable from the battery, make sure its connected to the block.

If it cranks normally but doesn't fire up leave starter motor or its grounding alone: it does the job.

When the problem started? Any recent repairs? Any codes? SES is lit? Can you hear fuel pump building up pressure when you turn key to ON (but not to START)?
