Will wheel adapters be safe?

Will wheel adapters be safe?
There is a local Craigslist user selling some good condition 17" wheels with snow tires from their BMW.
Bolt pattern is 5x120 and my car is 5x114
I see a set of 4 adapters on ebay for about $80... it looks like the wheels will stick out about 1.25".
Will these adapters solve my problem? Are they safe and reliable?

Depending on the type of adapters, they will push your wheels out more than you actually would want.
Crusher is right ... typical of him.

If its a killler deal and you absolutely love the style of rim....i would suggest going against adapters but instead find a wheel shop around that is able to fill and redrill instead. This can be done typically from 140-200 cost...which in the end is perhaps double a decent set of adapters....but the better way to go.

spacers are fine adapters are a little different. you can risk it if you want. But there is also the issue of BMW offset. Im sure they style wheel he is talking about is 5/740i's split 5s First of all BMWs run low OEM offsets, usually hovering no higher than the mid 20s. A decent adapter is going to be atleast 20mm. It wont work.
A better idea is to run the C4 grand sport wheels. The BMW adapter will work with them and Vettes run +50 offsets so he can play around and get some decent width wheels.
