Manual transmission only came with the Maxima SE.

They are VERY RARE or in POS condition

I can't give much advice on building up a stock 5 speed other than suggesting a performance clutch (never owned a manual). If you got the cash and want to, you could always find a good transmission shop and ask for a rebuild to get it into good shape if there's a problem.

I was looking into doing a auto -> 6 speed swap on my 02 a while back, and was looking into the Sentra 6 speed internals with a Maxima bell housing. Might be worth looking into transmissions from other Nissans and their reviews after being swapped into 5th gen Maximas. Some people have done these sorts of swaps already, and often times the transmissions are not only cheaper with lower miles, but can operate a little more efficiently/more desirably. Might be worth a good read if that sparks your interest.

What's wrong with your trans?

How many miles on it?

Is it VLSD or open diff?

Describe the problem.

Options include;

1. Locate a used 5 speed trans. Any trans from a '99-'01 maxima will work. Junk yards & car-part.com will be a good place to start.
Put new OEM Nissan input & output shaft seals in the "new" used trans.

2. Have your trans rebuilt. This is most likely the more expensive option. If cash is a consideration, see option 1.

3. Consider installing a clutch kit while the trans is out. Pulling it again after the replacement goes in to put in a clutch is not ideal.

Will you be doing the work yourself, or having a shop perform the swap?
