Squealing belt only at startup
Squealing belt only at startup
Hi my belt squeals at startup sometimes right away but usually only if i turn on the fan. It always stops once the car has warmed up and been driven a little. The belt is about two months old and feels tight. Any ideas that would explain the only squealing when i turn on the fan. I noticed if it starts squealing from turning in the fan i can shut off the fan then turn it back on and then off a few times and that causes the squeal to go away.
When you say fan, do you mean the climate control?
If the AC compressor is squeaking, you would hear it when the climate control fan is turned on because there is a clutch that engages/disengages the compressor when you turn on/off the AC.
It may be your compressor clutch bearing since the belt is new.
Also, how old is your power steering pump belt?
To better diagnose the source of the squeal, have someone start the car & turn on/off the climate control while you listen for the source of the belt noise.
Post the results of your observations & we'll help with repair suggestions.

The power steering belt is probably old . I never changed it and have the car 5 years.
I had the alternator changed and the belt changed and it started afterwards. wonderingif something is not lining up . I know the clutch engages when you start the fan but it is interesting that it only does it when i start the car and start the fan right away. If i wait then it doesnt squeal.
Too cold here in nyc to play with it outside . will do the testing when it warms up a little.
My I35 chirps a little on cold/wet mornings. Goes away after the car warms up. To troubleshoot, do the following:
-Spray some water on the ribbed sides of both the PS and alternator belts. If the squealing goes away, one or more pulleys are misaligned.
-If the squealing gets louder, the belt tension is messed up.
-If the squealing stays the same, one or more of the accessory bearings are worn.
With the belts off, spin each pulley and tug it side-to-side. It should spin freely with no roughness or binding. The PS pulley usually has a little play but the other ones should be nice and tight. Watch the belts as they spin around the pulleys. If they shimmy and don't spin true, that pulley is misaligned. A good remedy for this is using a Goodyear Gatorback belt. It's ribs have a distinct pattern compared to other belts and are more tolerant of misaligned pulleys. Make sure to also clean the pulleys with a stiff brush and some brake clean to remove any gunk.
