Oil leak Cant tell if its tranny or motor oil

I have a 2000 maxima this pretty bad leak I cant tell if its transmission oil or motor oil. It is between where the engine and transmission meet. ill post some pics

Engine oil leak.... upper oil pan half moon seal....

/. upper oil pain half moon? dont tell me the rear main seal and what is the component in the picture the bottom of the bellhousing?

Probably the seal on the upper oil pan.
Not a real fun job, but once you get it done, it'll be good for another 15 years.

It's a rubbery plastic strip that goes in that groove.

Yeah, just did it on my 02 (200,000 miles). Rear main seal comes as a kit with the moons and seal plate. Do the front main at the same time (easy) but sold separately.

The crossmember and exhaust have to come out. Also, make sure you get some good gasket sealer for the oil pans. Hondabond is very good and one tube will do the job.

I did mine on my max when I first got it. I made sure the sealing surfaces were super clean and waited 24 hours before I poured in the oil.. I also picked up 2 bolts to make studs for aligning the pan to the block.


you want to do this perfectly so you don't have to re do it. I used permatex ultra grey...

Putting it up your butthole is another good way to tell what it is.
