My Beautiful Max Totalled
#41
*Status update
Neighbor came by yesterday and got under the car with a jack and a ruler.
He said the axle is straight as a pin and he popped that thing right back in place with a good push. The springs popped right into place with it. If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it myself but it did. He said the measurements are all perfect to continue with the rest of it which is basically body work and the four new tires it needs. I don't even need an axle. The junkyard Max is also white so it looks like it's going to be a lot less work than I thought. Of course I intend to have it checked out by a shop before starting the body work just to make sure it's all good on that popping back into place stuff. Then I go to the DOT inspection and rescue the salvage title out. Does anyone know anything about what I'm talking about here?
I'll post a couple of pics of the post popping later today.
Geez for a bunch of guys who fix your own cars up and do all these mods I'm surprised at thee negative feedback on this. I love that little car and I can't stand to let it go.

the reason it was totaled, is because it was totaled, to 98% of people it would be totaled, you are going against the grain and you know this, and have a neighbor who may know his stuff, which is making it seem way more possible.
again if you took it to a real professional shop, i would be interested to see if they would even look at your car.

Nice very nice, glad he looked at it and started "work" on it, and its not that its really all that negative, look at it more like people are being realistic and practical

Thanks so much for the feedback 99. After paying 8000 and putting another 4 into it I think it's well worth trying. I'll keep you all posted as to the progress which is mostly body work at this point hopefully and thanks again to all who responded. This forum has been so helpful to me over the years. I call you my support group. lol

**Update The revival is on. Thank you to Prophecy99for asking after us LOL I dragged this wreck to another state and it's been sitting for almost 2 years. It has some codes P0100/P0325/ Pending P1490/P0446 but I've fixed some things (cracked evap canister back by the gas tank) and haven't cleared them yet. I have a leaky oil pan gasket and it's noisy so I have to see what's going on there but I am not giving up on this car with all the money already spent. The bodywork is mostly done but for 2 doors which I already found for $60 and the gas cap lever (I have to go through the trunk). The bill for the body repair was $3000 but the guy stored it for almost 1 year inside I think he should have thrown in the doors but he didn't unfortunately. The frame and susp are fine I just hope I haven't killed it by letting it sit so long. Thanks in advance for all the questions I might have coming up, you guys (and gals) are such a big help! I'll be searching the forums for restorative repairs after sitting and any help would be so much appreciated.

Well I have 12,000 into this car already so yes I think I'll keep going a bit longer haha
I already got another one a 2003 Max but I love this car and she still starts right up. I just hope I can get it on the road before the rust eats up to the roof LOL
I found the radiator support needs replacing yesterday so I started to look at other things and all I see is rust now. TY for the feedback Donkeypunch

Okay even though it's really just me commenting I am going to keep posting here as a sort of progress report so I can have all this info in one place I guess. I hope that isn't against any forum rules or anything. I now realize that the gas tank nozzle assembly was swapped out by the body work mech. so there could be failing components that have been replaced. Oh boy! At least he left the old one in the trunk so I will have the parts just in case. Who knows what all they replaced and what is or isn't working.
Just FYI it wasn't my idea to have the bodywork done first, I totally would not have done that... My man knows next to nothing about auto mechanics and you can't tell him anything.

I wouldn't fix it looking like that. You'd be better off buying one from the south and shipping it up there. You could even fly down and drive one back for less money than fixing it. No matter how much you put into it the rust will still be there.
I just took these pics of my 300,000 mile 00 that lives outside. Not a speck of rust anywhere. This is how nearly every car on the road looks down here.

Nice undercarriage and thank you for the pep talk! I will drive this car until it rots out from under me, I'm stubborn, plus I already got another Max, a 2003 as the original plan was to keep this one for parts with many the parts being new on the 01 at least I still have that option lol

when cars go to jersey shores, theres this visble salty film on your car (paint and all), do you get that when u go to the beach down there?

One good thing the body man did was secure that gas nozzle assembly thing for me as I might be needing some of those components. The nozzle where you fuel up is loose and wiggly so that doesn't seem right...lol
Right now I am looking at the gas tank and lines and sensors back there because it's putting out white smoke and I don't know if I should run it a while and see if it clears up or start looking for bad seals. Ugh! Today it's tires because they are all flat and old from sitting. Thank you so much for the support and encouragement!

Not sure how the insurance regs vary from state to state but here in FL they add 80% of parts (not labor) purchased within the last 12 months.
Had a friends stock 240SX get hit and totaled. She had just put tires, radiator, starter and a lot of other new parts on it. Luckily she had all the receipts. Over $800 just in parts.

I have heard its a "no fault" state so both insurance companies split the costs.
If someone hits you, supposedly you get money from their side & your side.

For property damage, the at fault drivers insurance pays for all damages.
